Chapter 5 - The War for Chicago

The internal betrayal shook the Rossi organization to its very core. Caruso was captured trying to flee the estate grounds, and Roman executed him personally in the basement—a cold, silent justice that sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld.

The Marcone family, realizing their mole was dead and their window of opportunity was closing, declared open war on the Rossi syndicate.

For three weeks, the city of Chicago became a battleground. Docks were burned, supply lines severed, and high-profile shootouts filled the nightly news.

Inside the Lake Forest estate, Roman barely slept. He spent eighteen hours a day in his tactical war room, coordinating retaliatory strikes, his face growing gaunt, his eyes hollow with exhaustion.

One night at 2:00 AM, Aaliyah walked into his office carrying a mug of black coffee.

Roman was sitting at his grand desk, surrounded by maps of the city, satellite photos, and financial ledgers. He looked up, surprised to see her up so late.

“You should be resting, Aaliyah,” he said, his voice deep and weary.

“So should you,” she replied, placing the mug on his desk. She leaned against the edge of the mahogany table, looking down at the map of the Marcone stronghold in South Chicago. “How much longer can this go on?”

“Until one of us is dead,” Roman said plainly. He rubbed his temples, staring at the ceiling. “The Marcones have hired mercenaries from South America. They aren't following the old codes. They’re targeting families, homes… everything.”

He reached out, his long fingers unexpectedly wrapping around Aaliyah’s wrist. The touch was warm, gentle, sending a sudden jolt through her chest.

“I’m sending you and Leo to Italy tomorrow,” Roman said softly. “I have a compound in Tuscany. High walls, fifty loyal guards. You’ll be safe there.”

Aaliyah looked down at his hand, then up into his dark eyes. “And you?”

“I stay here and finish this.”

“You mean you stay here and die,” she countered, her voice rising with anger. “You think I don't see what you’re doing? You’re fighting like a man who wants to be put in the ground so he can join his wife!”

Roman stood up abruptly, his tall frame towering over her. “Don't talk about things you don't understand!”

“I understand that Leo needs a father!” Aaliyah yelled right back, stepping into his personal space, completely fearless. “He lost his mother, Roman! If you throw your life away in some stupid mob war, he loses everything! Do you have any idea how much he loves you? How much he watches you every time you walk into a room?!”

Roman stared at her, his chest heaving. The silence between them grew thick, electric, heavy with unspoken emotions that had been building since the night she saved his son.

“Why do you care so much?” Roman whispered, stepping closer until their faces were inches apart. “You were just hired to be a nanny, Aaliyah. Why are you still standing in the middle of my war?”

“Because I love him!” she cried, tears spilling over her lashes. “And because… God help me, Roman… I can't bear the thought of losing you either.”

Roman’s breath hitched. Before he could process her words, he reached out, cupped her face in his large, scarred hands, and pulled her into a fierce, desperate kiss.
