Chapter 7 - The Voice in the Storm

The wind at the top of the lighthouse was deafening, howling through the broken glass panels of the lantern room like a chorus of screaming specters.
Nora pushed open the heavy brass door of the emergency radio cabin, dragging Madeline inside and slamming the deadbolt into place.
The room was small, filled with dusty brass dials, primary emergency switches, and a massive shortwave radio console bolted to a heavy steel desk.
Nora rushed to the power panel on the wall, lifting the protective glass cover over the emergency breaker.
She slammed the heavy knife switch down.
With a low, mechanical groan, an old battery bank under the desk hummed to life. Red indicator lights flickered across the radio console.
Nora grabbed the heavy plastic microphone, flipping the broadcast toggle to the emergency distress channel: Channel 16 - Coast Guard International Distress.
"Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!" Nora screamed into the microphone, her voice echoing through the emergency frequency. "This is Nora Bennett broadcasting from the Blackwood Point Lighthouse! I am under armed attack by private mercenaries! I have a six-year-old child with me! We are trapped in the lantern room!"
Static hissed through the speaker, followed by a faint, crackling voice:
"Distress caller on Channel 16, this is Coast Guard Cutter 'Vigilant,' five miles off Blackwood Head. State your coordinates and the nature of your emergency."
"We are at the Blackwood Point Lighthouse!" Nora cried, pressing the receiver to her ear. "The property belongs to Eleanor Vance! They have armed guards cutting through the tower doors! They kidnapped my daughter six years ago! Please, God, help us!"
Before the operator could respond, the heavy brass door of the radio cabin groaned as a sledgehammer struck the exterior hinges from the top stairs.
CRASH.
The iron hinges twisted. A second blow sheared the top bolt straight off the frame.
"Nora!" Julian Vance’s voice shouted through the splintered wood of the door.
Nora froze.
"Julian?" Nora called out, stepping between the door and Madeline.
"Nora, open the door!" Julian yelled, his voice ragged, breathless, sounding utterly desperate. "My mother is insane! She brought a squad of mercenary contractors from New York! She’s going to eliminate everyone in this tower to cover her tracks!"
"You helped her, Julian!" Nora shouted back, tears of bitter betrayal burning her eyes. "You let her take my baby!"
"I came to stop her!" Julian screamed, his voice breaking into a sob outside the door. "I followed her from Connecticut! Nora, please! I have the master files! I have the original adoption fraud contracts signed by my mother and Harrison! I brought them for the police!"
A sudden, sharp gunshot echoed from the stairs outside, followed by a wet, sickening thud and the sound of Julian groaning as his body hit the iron steps.
"Julian!" Nora gasped.
The radio cabin door was kicked wide open.
Eleanor Vance stepped into the room, holding the smoking nickel-plated revolver. Behind her stood her chief security contractor, holding an assault rifle.
On the stairs outside, Julian lay slumping against the iron railing, clutching his bleeding abdomen, his eyes fixed on Nora with a look of overwhelming, tragic repentance. He reached out a trembling, blood-stained hand, dropping a thick leather folder onto the top stair.
"It's... all in there, Nora..." Julian gasped, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. "Save... our daughter..."

Eleanor didn't even look at her dying son. She stepped over his legs, her icy eyes fixed on Nora and Madeline.
"You have been a thorn in my side for six long years, Nora," Eleanor said, raising the revolver, pointing it straight at Nora’s forehead. "It ends tonight."
