Chapter 10 - THE EVERLASTING GLOW

That evening, after the guests had departed and the stars began to twinkle in the clear night sky, I sat on the wooden porch swing with Maya asleep in my arms.
The quiet hum of crickets filled the warm summer air.
Abigail sat on the steps nearby, sipping a cup of herbal tea, looking out at the peaceful garden where the balloon decorations swayed gently in the night breeze.
"Do you ever think about that day in the delivery room?" Abigail asked softly, turning her head to look at me.
I stroked Maya’s soft hair, watching her peaceful chest rise and fall in a rhythmic, healthy sleep.
"I think about it sometimes," I admitted gently. "I remember how dark it felt when Margaret screamed that she was wrapped in plastic. I remember the fear in Ethan's eyes."
I looked down at my daughter’s face—her glowing, healthy skin, her soft lips, her long eyelashes resting against her cheeks.
"But then I look at her now," I continued, my heart overflowing with an everlasting, profound peace. "And I realize that the membrane wasn't a curse. It was just a shell. It was the universe testing whether we were strong enough to break through the dark to find the light underneath."
Abigail smiled, a tear of quiet happiness sparkling in her eye. "You broke through, Clara. You gave her everything."
"We gave her everything," I corrected softly, holding out my hand to Abigail.
Abigail came up the steps, taking my hand, and sitting beside us on the wide porch swing.
Together, we swung gently under the canopy of stars, listening to the soft breathing of the little girl who had shattered a legacy of shame and replaced it with a lifetime of love.
