Chapter 8 - The Trap at Beacon Hill

The private dining room at the elite Beacon Hill Club was dimly lit, overlooking the snow-covered cobblestone streets below. Camila sat at a corner table, wrapped in a cheap imitation-fur coat, sipping champagne with a triumphant, arrogant posture. She genuinely believed she had backed Nora Sterling into a corner.

When the heavy oak doors opened, Nora walked in alone. She wore a tailored crimson coat, her posture immaculate, radiating an effortless authority that made Camila’s tense demeanor look utterly desperate.

"You're late, Nora," Camila sneered, setting her glass down with a sharp click. "I hope you brought the transfer confirmation. My flight back to Miami leaves at midnight."

Nora casually unbuttoned her coat, sat down across from her, and placed a sleek leather folder on the white tablecloth.

"You haven't changed at all, Camila," Nora observed quietly. "You still think real power is something you can steal, buy, or blackmail your way into."

"Save the moral lecture!" Camila snapped, her eyes flashing with greed. "Your father wasn't a saint. He was a ruthless billionaire, and you’re just riding his coattails. Open the folder and show me the wire transfer, or I hit 'send' on an email to the Federal Prosecutor’s office right now!"

She pulled out her smartphone, hovering her thumb over the screen with a malicious grin.

Nora didn't flinch. She simply opened the leather folder and slid three documents across the table.

"Before you press 'send', you should read those," Nora said calmly.

Camila glanced down, her confident smile faltering as her eyes scanned the top page. It wasn't a bank transfer confirmation.

It was an official federal indictment draft, accompanied by a sworn affidavit signed by Gavin Prescott.

"What... what is this?" Camila stuttered, her face rapidly losing color.

"Gavin turned over his personal drive two days ago, Camila," Nora explained smoothly. "When you reached out to him last month trying to get him to join your extortion plot, he realized just how far down the drain you were dragging him. He came to my office, confessed everything, and gave Marcus the original, unedited server logs from four years ago."

Camila’s hand began to shake violently. "Gavin... Gavin would never betray me!"

"Gavin realized that protecting my father’s legacy was the only way he could ever earn the right to look his daughter in the eye again," Nora replied softly. "The files you modified constitute federal extortion, corporate espionage, and evidence tampering. And standing outside that door right now are two officers from the Boston Police Department and an agent from the State Attorney General’s Office."

Camila jumped out of her chair, knocking her champagne glass over. The liquid pooled across the white cloth, soaking into the papers.

"You set me up!" Camila shrieked, backing toward the window.

"You set yourself up the moment you mistook my silence for weakness," Nora said, standing up and towering over her ruined adversary. "I gave you a chance to walk away four months ago. You chose to come back for more."

The heavy oak doors pushed open. Two uniformed officers stepped into the room, accompanied by Marcus Vance.

"Camila Vega," the lead officer stated, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted felony extortion and corporate fraud."

As the officers snapped the cuffs around Camila’s wrists and led her crying out of the room, Nora didn't watch her leave. She picked up her leather folder, walked over to the window, and watched the snow fall peacefully over the city.
