Chapter 7 - The Trial of Souls

The fallout from the battle at the Calumet River shook Chicago to its core.
Over forty high-ranking members of the Moretti syndicate were arrested. Federal agents seized hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal assets, weapons, and narcotics. The Moretti crime family was completely destroyed in a single night.
True to his word, Judge Arthur Vale ensured that Julian DeLuca’s name was kept clear of the criminal indictments. Julian had turned over decades of syndicate files, acting as an official confidential informant under federal protection.
However, one final trial remained before Julian could step into the light: the public trial of Thomas Bell.
Three weeks later, in a packed federal courtroom in downtown Chicago, Thomas Bell sat in a orange jumpsuit, his hands shackled to his waist.
Julian sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a simple navy suit. Beside him sat Nora Bennett, holding his hand tightly.
Judge Vale presided over the sentencing hearing. The courtroom was silent as the prosecutor read the charges: attempted murder, conspiracy to commit treason with an organized crime syndicate, and domestic terrorism.
When given the chance to speak, Thomas stood up slowly, his silver hair unkempt, his eyes hollow. He looked past the judge, past the lawyers, straight at Julian.
"I spent thirty-two years serving a lie," Thomas said, his voice echoing in the solemn courtroom. "I thought revenge would give me my son back. I thought killing Julian DeLuca would wash away thirty years of disgrace."
Thomas paused, a single tear running down his withered cheek. "But when I saw that little girl dance... when I saw her reach out her hand to a man who had lost everything... I realized the monster wasn't Julian. The monster was the hatred I had carried in my heart."
He looked at Nora, then down at his trembling, shackled hands. "I am sorry, Julian. I am sorry for what I tried to do to your family."
Julian looked at the old man who had betrayed him, the man who had almost destroyed his life. He felt no anger left in his chest—only a deep, profound sadness for a life wasted on vengeance.
Julian stood up from his seat, looking Judge Vale in the eye.
"Your Honor," Julian said, his voice ringing clear through the courtroom. "The state is asking for maximum security life imprisonment without parole. I ask that he be remanded to a medium-security medical facility. He is an old man, and he has served his punishment."
The courtroom gasped. Thomas looked at Julian in utter disbelief, his mouth open, fresh tears pouring down his face.

Judge Vale looked down from his bench, a small, subtle nod of respect passing between him and Julian.
"So ordered," Judge Vale said, slamming his gavel down. "Court is adjourned."
