Chapter 7 - The Legal Battle

The next three weeks were a trial by fire.

Arthur Stanton kept his promise. By Monday morning, news of my sudden departure from Vance & Associates and the cancellation of my high-profile wedding to Noelle Stanton was plastered across the local business rags. Headlines called me erratic, unstable, and accused me of abandoning my fiduciary duties to the firm's clients.

Arthur filed an injunction to freeze my assets, claiming I had misappropriated corporate funds to support a "secret second family."

I didn't hire a defense attorney. I represented myself.

On a rainy Tuesday morning in the Philadelphia County Courthouse, I stood before Judge Sarah Jenkins—a tough, no-nonsense family court judge who had known my father for thirty years.

Arthur Stanton sat across the aisle with three of the top litigators in Pennsylvania, while Noelle sat in the gallery, wearing a dark suit, watching me with cold disdain.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Jenkins said, leaning over her bench, looking at me through her half-moon glasses. "The plaintiffs have presented serious allegations regarding your conduct, your sudden abandonment of your firm, and your financial management. How do you respond?"

I stood up, holding a thick leather folder.

"Your Honor," I said, my voice resonating clearly through the high-ceilinged courtroom. "The plaintiffs claim I am unstable. They claim I misappropriated funds. What they fail to mention is that for four years, my late father, Richard Vance, used a shell corporation—Vance Holdings LLC—to hide the existence of my biological children from me through forged legal documents and extortion."

Murmurs erupted through the gallery.

Arthur’s lead attorney stood up quickly. "Objection, Your Honor! This is irrelevant to the corporate dissolution!"

"Overruled," Judge Jenkins snapped. "Proceed, Mr. Vance."

I walked to the center of the room, laying three certified paternity test results onto the clerk's desk, followed by the original forged letter and the financial audit trails Marcus had signed under pressure.

"These are DNA results confirming, with ninety-nine point nine percent certainty, that I am the biological father of Leo, Maya, and Chloe Ames," I stated firmly. "And these are bank records proving my father used firm resources to intimidate their mother, Rachel Ames, into hiding."

I turned to look directly at Arthur Stanton.

"I did not abandon my firm, Your Honor," I continued. "I dissolved a fraudulent entity built on extortion. I have reopened my grandfather's original practice, Vance Legal, in Chestnut Hill. Every single client from Vance & Associates was given the choice to stay with Mr. Stanton or transfer their files to me. As of eight o'clock this morning, seventy percent of those clients chose to transfer."

Arthur’s face turned white as sheet paper. His lead attorney looked down at his desk, unable to counter the overwhelming evidence.

Judge Jenkins reviewed the DNA records and the audit logs for five long, silent minutes. When she looked up, her eyes were filled with righteous indignation.

"Mr. Stanton," Judge Jenkins said, her voice dropping like an anvil. "If you or your firm file one more frivolous motion against Mr. Vance, I will personally cite you for contempt and refer your legal team to the state ethics board for investigating a fraudulent suit. Case dismissed."

She slammed her gavel down with a deafening CRACK.

Arthur stood up, his mouth working silently in rage, while Noelle grabbed her purse and stormed out of the courtroom without looking back.

I closed my briefcase, feeling a massive weight lift off my chest.

For the first time in my life, I was free.
