Chapter 8 - The Desperate Entreaties

Over the next three months, my family launched a desperate, unhinged campaign to save themselves from the consequences of their actions.
When they realized that legal force couldn't break me, they tried public emotional blackmail.
My mother contacted a local sensationalist local news outlet, offering an "exclusive interview" about how her "millionaire developer son" had arrested his own aging father and struggling brother over a "minor family misunderstanding."
She sat in front of the cameras wearing an old sweater, weeping about how cold-hearted I was, claiming I had abandoned my family after making money and was letting my own brother rot in jail while his children starved.
The story backfired spectacularly.
Before the news outlet could air the second half of the segment, Arthur Vance released the full, unedited high-definition security camera footage from my penthouse.
The video went viral across the Pacific Northwest within forty-eight hours.
Millions of viewers watched as my mother bragged on camera about invading my penthouse, claiming "the family building will work wonderfully for all of us" and declaring that "ownership isn't negotiable." They watched Cole drink my liquor, Tessa tear through my cabinets, and my father calmly read his paper while occupying a house they didn't own.
The public reaction was brutal and unanimous.
Comment sections were flooded with support for me. Local news commentators labeled my family "the ultimate entitlement parasites." The news station issued a formal apology to Vance Development Group for failing to verify the facts before airing my mother’s tearful interview.
When public opinion turned against them, they tried to reach me through intermediaries.
Uncles, aunts, and distant cousins who hadn't spoken to me in fifteen years suddenly began calling my corporate office, leaving voicemail after voicemail:
"Evan, it's your Uncle David. What you're doing to your brother is un-Christian. Family forgives."
"Evan, your mother is sick with worry. She’s sleeping in a cheap apartment. How can you sleep in that penthouse knowing your parents are suffering?"
"Evan, drop the charges against Cole. He learned his lesson. Let him rebuild his life."
I didn't answer a single call. I instructed my corporate secretary to log every phone number and forward it directly to Arthur's office. Arthur issued formal cease-and-desist warnings to every relative who attempted to contact me, warning them that further harassment would result in civil restraining orders.

They thought I was holding a grudge. They didn't understand that I was simply executing justice.
A grudge is emotional. It requires energy, anger, and heat. What I felt for my family was none of those things. It was cold, absolute indifference. They were strangers who had broken into my life, and I was dealing with them the same way I would deal with any criminal enterprise attempting to destroy my business.
