CHAPTER 1 The female director took the old man's arm and pulled him away from the donor's table.

The female director took the old man's arm and pulled him away from the donor's table.
Every crystal glass in the ballroom seemed to freeze in mid-air.
The charity gala was staged to look truly benevolent.
White roses climbed the golden columns.
Cameras waited near the stage.
A huge donation screen lit up behind the podium, ready to celebrate generosity with large numbers and elegant fonts.
Around the room, wealthy guests in black formal attire sat under chandeliers, their faces illuminated by candlelight and their own air of importance.
Then the ragged old man appeared.
His coat was too thin for the evening chill outside.
One sleeve was torn at the wrist.
His silver beard was neatly trimmed, but his shoes were worn at the heels, and the rain had darkened the hems of his trousers.
In one hand, he held a small envelope carefully, as if it contained something fragile.
He didn't yell.
He didn't interrupt anyone.
He simply walked toward the front table, where a folded card marked the seat reserved for the evening's anonymous sponsor.
The director spotted him before he even sat down.
“What do you think you’re doing?” she snapped.
The old man looked at the place card.
“I believe this seat is mine.”
A few guests laughed.
The director’s grip tightened on his arm.
“No, it isn’t.”
“This table is for people who matter.”
The old man lowered his eyes to the envelope in his hand.
“I was told to bring this here tonight.”
She gave a cold smile.
“And I’m telling you to leave.”
