Chapter 8 - The Morning Headline

Two weeks later, the morning paper hit the marble front steps of the Cold Spring estate before dawn.
Ethan was already awake, sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee while Maria prepared oatmeal and sliced bananas for Lily’s breakfast. The atmosphere was light, filled with the cozy chatter of Elena—who had decided to stay for the week—debating Maria on the proper way to season traditional empanadas.
The heavy oak front door chimed as security delivered the morning mail and newspapers. Ethan walked over to pick them up.
As he unfolded the front page of the Financial Chronicle, his eyes froze.
HEADLINE: COLE ENTERPRISES IN TURMOIL: CEO ACCUSED OF MISAPPROPRIATING FUNDS FOR UNDISCLOSED DOMESTIC ARRANGEMENT.
Beneath the headline was a telephoto photograph taken two days earlier—a picture of Ethan, Maria, and Lily laughing together while walking through the estate gardens, framed to look compromising and suggestive of corporate misconduct. Accompanying the article was an anonymous tip alleging that Ethan was funneling foundation funds to personally enrich a subordinate.
Ethan’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle pulsed in his cheek. The old, cold rage—the ruthless predator he thought he had buried under the autumn leaves—surged back to the surface.
“Ethan?” Maria asked, noticing his silence as she walked over from the counter. Her eyes caught the headline, and all the color drained instantly from her face. “Oh, God... No.”
Elena hurried over, snatching the paper. Her expression hardened into pure fury. “I told you!” she snapped, looking between Ethan and Maria. “I told you men like him bring destruction! They’re using you to destroy him, Maria, and they’re dragging our name through the mud to do it!”
“Mother, stop it!” Maria cried, her voice breaking. “He didn’t ask for this!”
“It’s fine,” Ethan said. His voice wasn't angry anymore; it was chillingly, terrifyingly calm. He laid the newspaper flat on the marble island.
“Ethan, what are you going to do?” Maria asked, trembling as she clutched the edge of the counter. “If the SEC launches an inquiry, if the media gets a hold of this... they’ll say I was just a gold-digger. They’ll fire me, they’ll take away everything—”
Ethan reached out, placing his hand firmly over hers, stopping her shaking. His eyes were fierce, clear, and unwavering.
“Look at me, Maria,” Ethan commanded softly.

She looked up into his eyes.
“They want a corporate war?” Ethan said quietly. “I’ll give them a war. But this time, I’m not fighting for a stock price. I’m fighting for my family.”
