Chapter 10 - The Red Thread (Happy Ending)

Later that night, after the music had faded into soft jazz and our guests were enjoying dessert under the twinkling lanterns, I walked out to the edge of the hill overlooking the dark valley.
The Texas sky was clear, studded with millions of bright, constant stars.
I felt a soft touch on my arm. Elena stood beside me, leaning her head against my shoulder.
In her hands, she held two glasses of sparkling apple cider. She handed one to me.
Down near the patio, Bernie was sitting with my mother, showing Mateo how to tie proper fishing knots with a piece of twine, their laughter drifting up through the warm night air.
"What are you thinking about?" Elena asked softly, wrapping her arm around my waist.
"I’m thinking about the old saying," I said, looking down at the twin red bracelets on her wrist resting against my suit jacket. "The one about the red thread of fate."
Elena smiled, looking down at the braided strings. "An ancient legend says that an invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break."
"It took eight years," I whispered, turning to pull her close against my chest. "It survived a flood, corrupt cops, and hundreds of miles. But it brought him back to you. And it brought both of you to me."
Elena lifted her face, her eyes reflecting the starlight above us.
"We’re whole now, Daniel," she said, her voice filled with a deep, absolute peace. "No more lost pieces. No more unfinished grief. Just us."
We stood there together on the quiet hilltop, holding each other tight, watching our son laugh under the golden lights of the home we had built together.
The storm was over.
The lost child was home.
