Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Morning broke over London Heathrow Airport in a soft, misty blanket of light.
The Spirit of 2A touched down on the runway with a smooth, barely perceptible chirp of rubber against concrete, taxiing gracefully toward the private terminal ramp.
Inside the cabin, passengers began gathering their personal belongings, chatting happily with the crew as the main cabin door clicked open to reveal the cool morning air of England.
Claire waited until every passenger had stepped off the aircraft.
She walked through the empty aisle, checking the seats, touching the smooth leather headrests, feeling the quiet, peaceful energy of the airplane resting after its long journey across the ocean.
She stopped beside seat 2A.
The small twelve-year-old violinist had left a little hand-drawn card resting on the cushion. Claire picked it up.
On the paper, drawn in bright colored pencils, was a picture of a silver plane flying through rainbow clouds. Across the bottom, written in neat child's handwriting, were the words:
Thank you for the best flight of my life!
Claire smiled, a soft, deep warmth spreading through her chest. She carefully folded the drawing and slid it inside her worn leather notebook, right beside her thin black metal access card.
She walked out of the cabin, stepping down the air-stairs onto the tarmac.
Captain Ethan Mercer was standing near the bottom of the stairs, completing his post-flight walkaround inspection with a flashlight in hand.
He looked up as Claire stepped onto the ground.
"Smooth flight, Chief," Ethan said with a warm grin.
"Flawless, Captain," Claire agreed, looking up at the majestic silver fuselage of The Spirit of 2A glistening under the morning sun.
"Where to next?" Ethan asked, leaning against his clipboard.
Claire looked out across the busy airport tarmac, watching dozens of planes taking off and landing against the rising sun—a vast, endless network of human journeys crossing the sky.
She reached into her jacket pocket, feeling the cold, smooth edge of her metal access card, then looked back at Ethan with bright, confident eyes.

"Wherever people need a safe way home, Ethan," Claire said softly, her voice rich with purpose and joy. "Wherever people need a safe way home."
She pulled her leather bag onto her shoulder and walked toward the terminal, her head held high, stepping forward into a bright, boundless horizon that belonged to everyone.
