Chapter 5 - The Hotel Ambush

The boutique hotel was quiet on a rainy Wednesday night. Elena had spent the afternoon working remotely on her laptop, finalizing her application for a senior project manager position at a major logistics firm in Seattle. She was rebuilding her life step by step, shedding the toxic residue of her fourteen-hour marriage.
Around 8:30 PM, there was a firm knock at her room door.
Elena paused, her hand hovering over her mouse. “Who is it?”
“Room service, ma’am,” a voice replied through the thick wood. “Complimentary fruit platter from the front desk.”
Elena frowned. She hadn't ordered anything. She walked to the door, looking through the peephole. The corridor was dimly lit, and a man stood with his head turned toward a tray in his hands, wearing a hotel uniform cap.
She unlocked the latch, pulling the door open two inches—forgetting for a split second that Julian knew her habits.
Before she could react, a heavy shoulder slammed against the door, throwing Elena backward onto the carpet. Julian burst into the room, kicking the door shut behind him and locking the deadbolt.
“Julian!” Elena gasped, scrambling backward toward the desk.
His hair was wet from the rain, his eyes bloodshot and unhinged. “You thought you could destroy me, didn't you? You thought you could walk away with your father’s money and leave me with nothing?!”
Elena felt a sharp spike of adrenaline, but she forced herself to breathe. Panic was death. Control was survival.
“Get out of my room, Julian,” she said, her voice steady despite her racing heart. “The security cameras saw you come up.”
“I came up the service stairs, Elena!” Julian laughed—a dry, terrifying sound. “Nobody saw me! You’re going to fix this. Right now.”
He pulled the roll of duct tape from his coat pocket and stepped toward her. “You’re going to endorse that $45,000 cashier’s check over to my company account, and then you’re going to call your attorney and drop the fraud charges.”
Elena reached her hand behind her back, searching the top of the desk for anything heavy. Her fingers brushed against a heavy brass desk lamp.
“Julian, listen to yourself,” Elena said, buying time. “If you do this, you will go to prison for kidnapping and robbery. You will lose everything forever.”

“I’ve already lost everything!” he yelled, lunging forward to grab her wrist.
Elena didn't scream. She swung the heavy brass lamp with all her strength, striking Julian squarely across the side of his jaw.
