Chapter 7 - The Birth at Dawn

The surgical delivery room on the seventh floor of Albany Medical Center was a blinding realm of stainless steel, bright overhead lights, and blue-scrubbed medical personnel.
Outside in the private waiting corridor, Evelyn Hail sat quietly on a wooden bench, her hands folded over her rosary beads, praying in low Italian whispers. Beside her stood Aaron, his arms crossed over his chest, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the gray light of dawn slowly breaking over the skyline of the city.
Inside the delivery suite, the atmosphere was a quiet, intense battleground.
Dr. Vance, the Chief of Obstetrics whom Victor had flown in via private car from Manhattan, stood between Lena’s knees, his face focused and calm.
"Alright, Lena," Dr. Vance said warmly. "You’re fully dilated. The baby’s head is right there. On the next contraction, I need you to give me everything you’ve got."
Lena lay back against the elevated pillows, her skin pale, her hair damp with sweat. She looked completely exhausted, her body spent from twelve hours of terror, emotional turmoil, and physical pain.
"I can't... Victor, I can't do it..." she whimpered, her voice trailing off into a faint whisper. "I’m too tired..."
Victor was sitting on a low stool beside her head, dressed in blue surgical scrubs. He reached out, gently wrapping his arms around her upper body, pulling her up against his chest so she was resting securely against his strength.
"You don't have to do it alone, Lena," Victor whispered into her ear, his hand cradling the back of her head. "I am holding you. Put your weight on me. Give our daughter her first breath."
Lena felt his heat, felt the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against her back—the same heartbeat she had rested her head against for four years.
A massive contraction seized her abdomen.
Lena gasped, her hands digging furiously into Victor’s arms, and she pushed.
"That’s it, Lena! Excellent!" Dr. Vance encouraged loudly. "Keep going! Head is delivering! Don't stop!"
"Push, baby!" Victor shouted gently, tears streaming down his face as he held her upright, pouring every ounce of his energy, his spirit, his love into her body. "Push!"
With a final, desperate cry that echoed off the cold tile walls, Lena gave everything she had left in her soul.
The room suddenly fell into a brief, heart-stopping silence.
Then, a high-pitched, wet, glorious sound cut through the quiet air.
Waaaaah! Waaaaah! Waaaaah!
Dr. Vance held up a tiny, squirming, dark-haired baby girl, her skin pink, her tiny fists waving wildly in the bright lights of the room.
"Time of birth: 6:14 AM," Dr. Vance announced with a brilliant smile. "She’s four pounds, eight ounces, pre-term but fully breathing on her own! Perfect APGAR scores!"
The pediatric nurses quickly wrapped the baby in a warm pink blanket and laid her directly onto Lena’s bare chest.
Lena sobbed—a sound of pure, overwhelming, miraculous joy. She wrapped her small arms around the tiny bundle, pressing her face against her daughter’s soft, dark hair, smelling the sweet, pristine scent of new life.
Victor leaned down over both of them. He placed his massive hand over the baby’s tiny back, his large frame trembling as tears poured unashamedly down his face.
The baby opened her dark brown eyes—eyes identical to Victor’s—and her tiny, delicate fingers reached out from the blanket, curling tightly around Victor’s pinky finger.
Victor let out a choked, ragged laugh, bending low to kiss the baby’s forehead, then pressing his lips gently against Lena’s trembling mouth.

"She’s beautiful, Victor," Lena whispered, looking up at him through her tears. "She’s absolute perfection."
"She’s yours," Victor whispered back, his forehead resting against hers as the baby lay between them. "She’s our miracle."
