Chapter 3 - The Gathering in the Drawing Room

The grand drawing room of the Mercer mansion was a masterpiece of classic New England architecture—high gilded ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and massive bay windows that offered a sweeping view of the dark, churning ocean below.
Brooke sat on a velvet sofa, surrounded by three of Dominic’s security guards. Her hands were frozen in her lap, her designer composure entirely replaced by a wild, trapped panic.
Sitting across from her on the opposing couch was Natalie Mercer.
Natalie had changed out of her pajamas into a simple charcoal sweater and jeans. She sat quietly, holding a warm cup of tea that Emma had brought her, her eyes fixed on Brooke with a mix of sadness and deep disappointment. Noah was upstairs under the watchful eye of a trusted nanny, safe from the storm unfolding below.
"Why, Brooke?" Natalie asked softly, her voice free of anger, carrying only a quiet sorrow. "My mother welcomed you into this home. I welcomed you. When Dominic brought you here, I thought you were the blessing he needed after years of carrying the weight of this family alone."
Brooke let out a bitter, sharp laugh, turning her head away to stare out the window. "Don't play the saint with me, Natalie. You lived off Dominic's money your entire life. You married a man who left you with nothing, and then you crawled back here expecting to be handed a cliffside estate for free!"
"That cottage belonged to my mother," Natalie replied firmly. "She built it with her own money before she even met Dominic's father. It was meant to be a refuge for anyone in our family who needed a place to rebuild. It wasn't about the money, Brooke. It was about home."
"Home is for people who can afford it," Brooke snapped, her venom finally spilling over. "You think you're better than me because your name is Mercer? Your brother is a monster who rules this city through fear and money. I was simply taking what I was owed for playing the dutiful little trophy wife for eight miserable months!"
"Is that what you think you were owed?"
The deep, resonant voice echoed from the hallway as the heavy double oak doors swung open.
Dominic entered the room, accompanied by Arthur Vance and two men in sharp grey business suits—the senior partners of Mercer Global Legal Counsel.
Behind them stepped a tall, handsome man in his late thirties wearing a bespoke Italian suit, holding a silver leather briefcase.
Julian Harrington.
Julian had a triumphant smile on his face as he walked into the room, expecting to find Brooke holding the signed documents, ready to finalize the offshore transfer before Dominic’s flight landed from London.
Instead, he stopped dead in his tracks.
His eyes fell on Dominic Mercer, who was sitting casually in a high-backed armchair at the head of the room, looking completely untouched by travel, holding a crystal glass of amber scotch.
Julian’s smile vanished instantly. His face drained of color.
"Dominic..." Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically from his sister to the armed guards standing near the doors. "I... I thought you were in Europe until Monday."
"I changed my schedule," Dominic said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "It seems my household required my personal attention. Please, Julian, take a seat. We were just discussing what your sister believes she is owed."
Julian took a sharp breath, trying frantically to regain his corporate footing. He straightened his tie and took two steps forward, attempting to project confidence.
"Dominic, there's obviously been a misunderstanding here," Julian said quickly. "I came by to deliver some preliminary financial disclosures regarding the prenuptial agreement our legal teams were reviewing—"
"Save it, Julian," Dominic interrupted flatly.
He gestured to Arthur Vance, who stepped forward and laid a thick, black leather folder onto the glass coffee table between the sofas.
"Twenty minutes ago," Dominic said, leaning forward, his dark eyes locking onto Julian's like a predator marking its prey, "my security team intercepted an encrypted wire transfer originating from Harrington Capital's Zurich branch. An automated request to liquidate twelve million dollars from the Catherine Mercer Charitable Foundation, authorized via a forged digital signature belonging to my sister, Natalie."
Julian’s jaw tightened. "That's impossible. We have no access to Catherine's foundation—"
"You had access the moment your sister stole the master key from my mother's desk thirty minutes ago," Dominic countered.
He looked over at Brooke, who shrank back into the sofa cushions.
"Brooke supplied the physical title deeds and bearer certificates," Dominic continued coldly. "You supplied the shell accounts in Nevis and the Cayman Islands. You were planning to strip my mother's trust, force my sister out of her home, and leave the country before our wedding on Saturday."
"That's a lie!" Brooke shrieked, standing up. "Dominic, he forced me! Julian forced me to do it! He told me if I didn't help him save his firm from bankruptcy, he would tell everyone about my past! He threatened me!"
Julian turned on his sister, his face twisted in absolute fury. "Shut your mouth, Brooke!"
"It's true!" Brooke cried, tears spilling over her cheeks as she looked frantically at Dominic. "Julian lost forty million dollars in bad crypto investments six months ago! He was facing indictment for bank fraud! He approached me and said if I married you, we could access the Mercer trust funds to cover his margins! I loved you, Dominic! I really loved you, but he forced my hand!"
"You pathetic idiot," Julian sneered, turning his glare toward his sister. "You were begging me to get you into this family! You wanted the mansion, you wanted the yachts, you wanted the Mercer name! Don't try to play the victim now!"
Dominic sat quietly, watching the two siblings tear each other apart with the dispassionate gaze of a judge presiding over a courtroom.
Natalie watched them in silence, taking a quiet breath. "They really didn't care about anyone, did they, Dominic?"
"No, sister," Dominic said softly. "They only cared about what they could steal."
Dominic set his glass of scotch down on the mahogany table with a quiet, decisive clack.
He looked at Arthur Vance.
"Arthur, call the State Prosecutor and the Special Investigations Division of the IRS," Dominic instructed, his voice dropping into iron. "Give them the complete digital paper trail, the forged power-of-attorney documents, and the wire transfers. I want Julian Harrington and Brooke Harrington arrested before the sun sets today."
Julian took a step back toward the door, his eyes wide with terror. "Dominic, wait! We can settle this privately! I can return every dollar! My firm has assets—"

"Your firm is insolvent, Julian," Dominic said coldly. "And you are about to discover what happens to people who try to rob the Mercer family."
The two armed guards stepped forward, blocking Julian’s exit, while two more moved to stand on either side of Brooke.
