Chapter 9 - The New Spark

Spring came early to Boston. The public garden bloomed with vibrant tulips and cherry blossoms, casting a warm, cheerful light across the city.

The original Whitmore Fine Jewelry workshop in South Boston had been fully renovated into a state-of-the-art design atelier and museum showroom. The brass sign outside, polished to a brilliant mirror shine, read simply:

WHITMORE & DAUGHTER — MASTER GEMOLOGISTS & DESIGNERS

Inside, light poured through expansive arched glass windows. The space was filled with young apprentices learning the fine arts of stone setting, metal engraving, and spectrographic appraisal under Arthur Whitmore’s expert guidance.

Claire stood in her private design studio upstairs, drafting new concept sketches for a custom bridal commission requested by a royal family from Scandinavia.

A gentle knock sounded at her door.

Marcus Vance stepped inside, carrying two cups of fresh espresso and a small velvet box tied with a satin ribbon.

"Am I interrupting the master at work?" Marcus asked with a warm smile.

"Never for espresso," Claire laughed, setting her pencils down and taking a cup from him. "How was the exhibition in Geneva?"

"Exhausting, but triumphant," Marcus said, sitting in the armchair across from her desk. "Every major collector in Europe was asking when the next Whitmore collection will be released. You’ve become the most sought-after independent jeweler on the continent."

"I couldn't have done it without your team at the Institute, Marcus," Claire said sincerely. "The authentication work you did on the Sri Lankan rough stones saved us months of bureaucratic delay."

Marcus set his espresso cup down and picked up the small velvet box he had brought with him. His expression turned thoughtful, genuine, and remarkably gentle.

"I didn't just come back from Geneva to bring you market reports, Claire," Marcus said softly.

He placed the velvet box on the desk between them.

Claire looked at the box, then up into his dark brown eyes. "What's this?"

"Open it."

Claire carefully untied the ribbon and opened the small leather case. Inside lay a breathtaking, unmounted raw diamond crystal—uncut, unpolished, yet naturally octahedral, glowing with a brilliant, crystal-clear inner light.

"It’s an octahedral diamond crystal from the Kimberley region in Australia," Marcus explained softly. "It’s completely unheated, untreated, and completely natural. Exactly as nature intended it to be."

Claire touched the raw crystal with a gentle fingertip. "It’s exquisite, Marcus."

"When I look at this stone, Claire," Marcus said, taking her hand gently in his, "I see what you represent. Unbreakable, entirely authentic, and possessing a brilliant light that no amount of pressure or darkness could ever dim."

He looked into her eyes with deep, unreserved affection. "I know you’ve spent years dealing with men who valued you only for what you could build for them. I don't want you to build anything for me, Claire. I just want to stand beside you while you build whatever your heart desires."

Claire felt a warm, quiet stillness settle in her chest—a feeling of absolute safety and profound joy that she hadn't felt in over a decade.

May you like

She smiled, her eyes shining with true happiness as her fingers folded around his hand.

"I’d like that very much, Marcus," she whispered softly.
