Chapter 8 - The Final Ledger

An hour later, the sirens of local precinct cars began wailing in the distance, echoing off the snow-covered streets of the warehouse district.
Julian, Maya, Bear, and I sat in the back of a heated commercial transport van parked two blocks away from the carnage. The operatives sent by the syndicate were all neutralized, and Marcus’s network had just suffered a catastrophic, irreversible blow from which it would never recover.
“The syndicate still thinks I’m dead, and they think Julian Vance is a ghost,” I said, leaning over a tactical map spread across my knees as I checked my communications gear. “They’ll send more men. They always do.”
“Let them come,” Julian said calmly, bandaging a graze along his forearm while Maya slept peacefully with her head resting in his lap, her hand still tightly clutching the silver locket. “We’ve been running for twelve years, Victor. It’s time we stopped hiding in the shadows and burned their empire down to the foundations.”

I looked at the locket resting against Maya’s sweater. Inside, Elena’s smile remained as bright and defiant as the day I first met her.
“No more running,” I agreed, a cold, resolute smile touching my lips. “We take the fight to their front door.”
