Chapter 3 - The Summons

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, bite-filled Chicago autumn. But the storm inside my life was escalating at a terrifying speed.

I was sitting at the kitchen island, watching Leo and Maya eat their oatmeal, when the doorbell rang.

Sarah gave me a cautious look before walking to the front door. A moment later, she returned holding a thick, manila envelope bearing the red wax seal of the Cook County Family Court.

My hands shook as I broke the seal and pulled out the legal documents.

It was an emergency petition for an expedited paternity test, accompanied by an ex-parte injunction restraining me from leaving the state of Illinois with the minors, Leo and Maya Carter. The petitioner was Luca Antonio Moretti. Attached to the filing was a list of twelve senior partners from Moretti Global’s elite legal firm—the same firm that had handled corporate acquisitions for international governments.

He was using a nuclear weapon to swat a fly.

"Mommy?" Maya looked up, a drop of milk on her chin. "Are you okay? You look pale."

"I'm fine, my sweet girl," I forced a warm smile, folding the legal papers and hiding them under my placemat. "Just boring work mail. Eat your breakfast, okay? We have a big day at the museum today."

Ten minutes later, after packing the kids into Sarah’s car for their morning outing, I called my own lawyer, Arthur Vance—a veteran family attorney who had helped me establish my independent life five years ago.

"Nia," Arthur’s voice was grim before I could even say hello. "I just received the electronic filing from Moretti's team. They're pushing for a hearing in forty-eight hours."

"Can he do this, Arthur?" I demanded, pacing the length of my living room. "He abandoned me! He signed away all marital claims during our divorce!"

"During the divorce, neither party acknowledged the existence of unborn children," Arthur explained quietly. "Under Illinois law, if a child is born within three hundred days of a marriage dissolution, the former husband is presumed to be the biological father. Legally, Nia... he has a strong prima facie case to request a DNA test. And with his financial resources, the judge will grant it."

"He's going to try to take them, Arthur," I whispered, my voice trembling with sudden, overwhelming dread. "His wife... Evelyn... she can't have children. He spent years going to fertility clinics! Now he sees my twins and thinks he can just buy his way into their lives!"

"He can request custody rights if the DNA matches," Arthur admitted cautiously. "Which means we need to stop playing defense and start playing offense. What do you have on him, Nia?"

I looked toward my office door, where the black leather binder sat inside the safe.

"I have the proof that his own corporate partner orchestrated our divorce," I said, my tone hardening into steel. "I have the forged medical files that Marcus Vance used to poison Luca's mind against me."

There was a sharp intake of breath on Arthur’s end. "Marcus Vance? The COO of Moretti Global? Nia, if that's true, it’s a bombshell. But if you drop that in open court, you aren't just fighting a custody battle—you're triggering a billion-dollar corporate scandal."

"I don't care about his company," I said coldly. "I care about my children. Draft a response, Arthur. Tell Mr. Moretti I’ll see him in court."

Two hours later, I received a text from an unknown number.

I didn't want to use lawyers, Nia. You forced my hand when you closed that door. Meet me at the Drake Hotel conservatory at 2 PM. Just you and me. No lawyers. If you come, I will suspend the court order.

I stared at the screen. It was classic Luca—using leverage to force a negotiation on his terms.

I typed back a single word: Fine.
