Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Light

Five years later.

The morning sun cast a warm, golden hue across the quiet town of Pacifico Pines.

At eighteen years old, Annie stood in her bedroom on the second floor of the farmhouse, packing her final leather suitcase. A large acceptance letter from the University of California, Berkeley—where she was set to study Public Policy and Humanitarian Law—lay open on her wooden desk.

She walked to the full-length mirror, adjusting the collar of her cream jacket. She was no longer the thin, frightened eight-year-old girl who had searched through a garbage bag outside a luxury hotel. She was a confident, compassionate, and brilliant young woman, carry the strength of a family that had overcome the darkest of storms.

Downstairs, the house smelled of fresh coffee, warm sweet bread, and fried eggs.

Catherine sat at the sunlit breakfast nook, reviewing the quarterly balance sheets for The Catherine & Annie Foundation, which now funded over fifty women's shelters and educational programs nationwide.

Victor stepped into the kitchen, carrying two plates of breakfast. At fifty years old, he had soft silver highlights at his temples, but his posture was strong, his eyes bright, and his smile warm. He set a plate in front of Catherine, pressing a soft kiss to her crown.

"Everything ready for the drive up to Berkeley?" Catherine asked, taking a sip of coffee.

"The SUV is loaded, the tires are checked, and Brian is double-checking the route," Victor smiled, sitting down across from her.

Footsteps sounded on the wooden stairs, and Annie walked into the kitchen carrying her backpack. Barnaby, now a senior golden retriever with a white muzzle, trotted slowly behind her, resting his head on her knee as she sat down.

"Morning, Mom. Morning, Dad," Annie smiled, leaning over to kiss both of their cheeks.

"Excited, sweetheart?" Catherine asked, taking her daughter's hand across the table.

"A little nervous," Annie admitted, looking out the window at the garden where she had grown up. "It feels strange leaving home."

Victor reached out, placing his warm hand over hers. "Home isn't just this house, Annie. Home is the values you carry inside you. You were born out of love, tested by hardship, and raised in truth. Wherever you go, you carry our family's light with you."

After breakfast, the family walked out onto the front porch. The coastal morning air was crisp and clear, carrying the sweet scent of pine trees and salt water.

Brian had the SUV waiting in the gravel driveway, holding the rear door open with a proud, paternal smile. "All set for college, Miss Annie?"

"All set, Brian," Annie smiled, giving the old man a warm hug.

Annie turned to her parents. She threw her arms around Catherine, hugging her tightly. "Thank you, Mom. For everything you suffered, for everything you built, for always loving me."

"Go change the world, my brave girl," Catherine whispered, blinking back tears of pride.

Annie then turned to Victor. He pulled his daughter into a powerful, warm embrace, holding her close against his chest.

"I am so proud of you, Annie," Victor whispered into her hair. "Never forget who you are."

"I won't, Dad," Annie promised softly.

She stepped into the backseat of the vehicle, waving through the window as Brian started the engine and slowly drove down the long, tree-lined driveway toward the coastal highway.

Victor wrapped his arm securely around Catherine’s waist, pulling her close against his side as they stood on the wooden porch, watching their daughter's car disappear into the bright morning horizon.
