Chapter 3 - The Ghost Protocol

The private jet touched down on a hidden runway deep in the Nevada desert just as the sun broke over the jagged red mountain peaks.

We were taken by heavily armored transport to Vanguard Site 9—a subterranean facility carved three hundred feet beneath the desert floor. This wasn't a corporate office; it was a fortress. Site 9 served as Vanguard’s primary research hub for next-generation defense cybernetics, orbital satellite tracking, and high-altitude tactical drones.

As the elevator descended deep into the earth, the doors opened to reveal a massive, bustling command center filled with dozens of technicians in dark grey uniforms operating advanced holographic workstations. High above the floor, a massive wall-sized screen displayed live satellite feeds from around the globe.

"Welcome to the Apex, Commander," Julian said as we stepped out onto the gantry platform overseeing the room.

A woman in a crisp white lab coat walked rapidly up the metal stairs toward us, carrying an encrypted datapad. She had sharp features, dark hair pulled into a tight bun, and eyes that held the fierce intelligence of a top-tier weapons developer.

"Dr. Aris Thorne, Chief of Cybernetics," Julian introduced her. "Aris, this is Captain Evelyn Sterling."

Dr. Thorne stopped dead in her tracks. She looked at me, then at the tactical suit I wore, her eyes widening in recognition. "The Commander of Blacksite Echo? The one who survived the thermobaric explosion?"

"The same," I nodded.

Dr. Thorne let out a breath she seemed to have been holding for five years. "Mr. Vance has had us running background simulations on your recovery files for thirty-six hours. Commander, the fact that you are walking upright after sustaining third-degree burns across forty percent of your dorsal muscular structure is a medical miracle."

"It wasn't a miracle, Doctor," I replied flatly. "It was spite and high-grade military painkillers."

Dr. Thorne chuckled softly, her respect for me instantly obvious. "Well, spite is an excellent motivator. Mr. Vance, we have an update on the Sterling situation. Twenty minutes ago, Senator Arthur Sterling held an emergency press conference on the steps of the Capitol Building."

"Put it on the main screen," Julian ordered.

Dr. Thorne tapped her tablet, and the massive center screen shifted to a live news broadcast from Washington D.C.

Arthur Sterling stood behind a battery of news microphones, looking haggard, pale, and desperate. His hair was disheveled, and his expensive suit looked slightly loose on his frame. Behind him stood Harper, wearing a black designer dress, dabbing at her eyes with a lace handkerchief, playing the role of a heartbroken, abused bride for the national media.

"My fellow Americans," Arthur spoke into the microphones, his voice thick with rehearsed, emotional tremor. "Yesterday evening, my family suffered a tragic, violent disruption at my daughter Harper’s wedding. My eldest daughter, Evelyn Sterling—who has tragically suffered from severe, unmanaged psychological trauma since her discharge from the armed services—interrupted the ceremony in a state of extreme mental distress."

The crowd of reporters gasped, camera flashes strobing violently.

"Julian Vance, the CEO of Vanguard Systems, was unfortunately manipulated by my daughter's erratic behavior," Arthur continued, leaning heavily on the podium. "We believe Evelyn is currently being weaponized by rogue corporate elements to sabotage the merger between our companies. I am publicly pleading with the authorities to apprehend my daughter safely so she can receive the intensive psychiatric care she desperately needs."

Beside him, Harper stepped up to the microphone, her voice trembling dramatically. "Julian... if you're watching this... please come home. She’s sick. She’s dangerous! She tried to attack me in the dressing room before the wedding! She burned herself years ago in a domestic incident, and she’s projecting her trauma onto our family!"

In the command center, the temperature seemed to drop twenty degrees.

I stood on the gantry, watching my sister lie to the entire world on national television, using my scars—the physical proof of my sacrifice—as evidence of my supposed insanity.

Julian turned to Dr. Thorne, his voice chillingly quiet. "Is the satellite uplink to NBC, CNN, and Fox News ready?"

"Fully intercepted, sir," Dr. Thorne replied. "We have hijacked the live broadcast feeds across all three major networks. We control their teleprompters and video output."

Julian turned to me. "Captain, the world is listening. Do you want to set the record straight?"

I stepped forward to the gantry railing, looking up at the high-definition camera mounted on the wall above the main screen. I pulled off Julian’s tuxedo jacket, standing proudly in my tactical suit, unzipping the high collar just enough to expose the edges of the jagged, silvery scar tissue climbing up my neck.

"Dr. Thorne," I commanded calmly. "De-encrypt File 88-Echo. Upload the helmet-cam footage from my tactical vest during the extraction at Blacksite Echo directly into the live broadcast."

Dr. Thorne’s eyes lit up with fierce satisfaction. "Uploading now."

Across the nation, the live press conference of Senator Arthur Sterling suddenly glitched. The audio cut out mid-sentence as Harper was weeping into her handkerchief.

In an instant, the news feed cut away from the Capitol steps, replacing the image of my lying family with high-definition, classified military helmet-cam footage dated five years ago.

The footage showed roaring orange flames, twisted metal, and the chaotic, terrifying noise of a burning transport chopper under heavy enemy mortar fire. A woman's voice—my voice—could be heard screaming tactical orders over the intercom as I charged directly into the blazing inferno. The camera caught the moment the fuel tank exploded, engulfing my back in white-hot flames, yet the footage showed me refusing to fall, pulling a bloody, unconscious Julian Vance out of the wreckage and carrying him across two miles of hostile desert terrain.

Beneath the video, a glowing gold text overlay appeared on every television screen in the country:

AUTHENTICATED U.S. SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND RECORDing SUBJECT: COMMANDER EVELYN STERLING - DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS RECIPIENT STATUS: ALIVE. DENIED MEDICAL CARE AND ILLEGALLY CONFINED BY SENATOR ARTHUR STERLING.

The press conference on the screen disintegrated into total, unadulterated chaos. Reporters began screaming questions at Arthur Sterling, waving their phones as the classified military footage played live on every news network in America.

Harper looked up at the broadcast monitors on the street, saw the footage of me crawling through fire to save the billionaire she had tried to marry, and let out a horrified, silent shriek before collapsing into her father’s arms. Arthur Sterling’s face turned gray as secret service agents rushed the podium, swarming him as the national media realized they had been covering up a war hero's illegal imprisonment.

Julian stood beside me on the gantry, looking up at the screen with absolute pride.

"That was step one," I said softly, watching my father being hustled into a black SUV by panicked aides.

"What's step two?" Julian asked.

I turned to him, my dark eyes burning with lethal precision. "Step two is taking back everything they stole from me."
