Chapter 6 - The Trial of the Architect

Six months later.

The federal courtroom on the fourth floor of the Dirksen Building was packed to capacity. Reporters, federal prosecutors, defense attorneys, and curious spectators leaned forward in their mahogany pews, watching the final act of a legal drama that had dominated the national media for weeks.

At the defense table sat Matteo Rizzo. Gone was the immaculate, confident executive who had run the Vitelli empire from a corner office. In his place sat a broken, bitter man in an orange jumpsuit, his jaw still bearing the faint scar from the punch Marco had delivered in the study.

On the prosecution side sat Marco Vitelli, dressed in a simple navy suit, out on a federal bond pending sentencing, flanked by his legal team.

The federal judge, a stern-faced woman with decades of bench experience, adjusted her glasses and looked down at the documents before her.

“Matteo Rizzo,” the judge’s voice echoed clearly through the solemn courtroom. “You have been found guilty on all counts: conspiracy to commit kidnapping, interstate concealment of a minor, extortion, and obstruction of justice. Do you have anything to say before this court passes sentence?”

Matteo stood up slowly, leaning heavily on the wooden defense table. He cast a venomous, sideways glance toward Marco, who sat motionless, staring straight ahead.

“Your Honor,” Matteo sneered, his voice dripping with spite. “The man sitting over there—Marco Vitelli—built an empire on blood and bribery. I was simply the one intelligent enough to keep the machine running when his personal obsessions threatened to destroy everything. He pretends to be a reformed family man now, but he is a criminal through and through. The court is sending the wrong man to prison.”

The gallery murmured.

The judge didn't blink. She looked down at Matteo with cold, clinical indifference.

“Mr. Rizzo,” the judge said, her voice cutting through the murmurs like a knife. “The court has reviewed the complete evidentiary record provided by the federal task force—records, I might add, that were voluntarily surrendered by Mr. Vitelli himself. You did not protect an empire; you weaponized human lives to secure your own power and control. You took a mother and a child and used them as pawns in a sick game of corporate manipulation.”

Matteo opened his mouth to speak, but the judge raised her hand.

“For the crimes of kidnapping, extortion, and obstruction of justice, this court sentences you to forty-five years in a federal penitentiary with no eligibility for parole. May God have mercy on your soul. Court is adjourned.”

The gavel came down with a sharp, definitive crack.

As federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel cuffs around Matteo’s wrists and dragging him away toward the holding cells, Matteo stared at Marco with pure, unadulterated hatred. Marco didn't flinch, didn't smile, and didn't look away. He simply watched the architect of his six-year nightmare disappear through the wooden double doors.
