Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Three months later.
The Texas sun rose bright and warm over the hill country outside Austin. The air smelled of wild cedar and fresh earth, clean and free of the stale iron scent of prison walls.
The State Supreme Court had officially vacated my conviction four weeks after the night at the foundry. Marcus Vance, along with twelve high-ranking officials named in Arthur Cole's red notebook, was currently awaiting trial in federal custody, facing sentences that would keep them behind bars for the rest of their natural lives.
The Moretti family had been completely dismantled by federal indictments, leaving no shadows behind to chase me or my family.
I stood on the wide wooden porch of a small, beautiful home sitting on ten acres of green pasture. In my hands, I held a cup of black coffee, watching the morning mist rise off the grass.
The screen door creaked open, and Chloe walked out, wearing a bright yellow sundress, holding a sketchbook under her arm. She walked over to the porch railing and leaned against me, looking out at the open land.
"What are you drawing today, Chloe?" I asked, setting my coffee down and stroking her soft hair.
She opened the sketchbook, revealing a detailed, beautiful drawing of the house, the oak trees, and two figures standing side-by-side on the porch under a brilliant sun.
"Us," she said simply, looking up at me with those bright blue eyes that had saved my life. "Just us."
Elena Vance pulled her car up the gravel driveway a moment later, stepping out with a thick stack of legal documents under her arm. She walked up the wooden steps, a warm smile on her face.
"Official exoneration papers signed by the Governor," Elena said, handing me the folder. "Full civil restitution granted. You're a free man, Gavin. Officially, completely, and legally."
I looked down at the official seal stamped at the bottom of the page. Gavin Cole: Fully Pardoned and Exonerated.
"Thank you, Elena," I said softly, shaking her hand. "For everything."
"Don't thank me," Elena said, looking down at Chloe with admiration. "Thank your chief legal advisor."
Chloe smiled—a genuine, beautiful child’s smile that I hadn't seen in five long years.

I kneeled down beside her, wrapped my arms around her small shoulders, and held her tight against my chest. The nightmare was gone. The chains were broken. The dark past had been buried under the truth, leaving only the endless sky of Texas ahead of us.
"Come on, Chloe," I said, standing up and taking her hand in mine. "Let's go build something real."
