Chapter 4 - The Spider's Web

The penthouse floor of the Blackwood Tower in downtown Boston was bathed in the dim, amber glow of midnight lamps.
Downstairs, the city slept under a light dusting of late April rain. Upstairs, sixty floors above the street, a war room had been established.
Robert sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring at three large monitor screens displaying real-time financial tracking algorithms, corporate registry trees, and decrypted phone logs provided by his private intelligence team.
Beside him sat Ethan, wearing a new pair of jeans, a clean dark green sweater, and drinking a cup of hot chocolate. The boy was clean-shaven now, his dark hair neatly cut, though he refused to take off his Boston Red Sox cap.
On the couch across the room lay Lily, sleeping peacefully under a warm cashmere blanket, monitored by a private pediatric nurse Robert had hired under full-time armed protection.
Marcus walked into the office, carrying a heavy, encrypted flash drive.
"Boss," Marcus said, plugging the drive into the main console. "Dr. Richardson broke completely. He gave us sixteen hours of audio confession, thirty-four account numbers, and the master access codes to the Apex Bio-Genetics internal network."
"And Rebecca?" Robert asked, his eyes never leaving the screens.
"She’s currently locked in the wine cellar of your Brookline estate under twenty-four-hour guard," Marcus replied cold-bloodedly. "We seized all seven of her satellite phones and her encrypted laptop. She hasn't realized yet that we’ve mirrored her drive."
"Show me the structure," Robert commanded.
Marcus tapped the keyboard. A complex visual node map erupted across the center screen.
At the center was not Apex Bio-Genetics.
At the center was a entity called The Prometheus Syndicate—a blind offshore investment trust registered in the Cayman Islands, owned through seven layers of shell companies in Zurich, Singapore, and Luxembourg.
"Prometheus isn't just a research group, sir," Marcus explained, pointing his pen at the screen. "It’s a black-market medical cartel catering to the ultra-wealthy elite in Europe and Asia. They specialize in three things: high-compatibility organ harvesting from vulnerable donors, experimental neuro-regeneration therapy using viable living brain tissue, and targeted financial assassinations."
Robert’s eyes narrowed as he scanned the list of investors connected to the Cayman trust.
"Look at line fourteen, sir," Marcus said softly.
Robert zoomed in on line fourteen. His breath caught in his throat.
Vanguard Medical Systems - Founder & CEO: Victor Sterling.
Victor Sterling was Robert’s oldest business partner.
They had started their careers together thirty years ago at MIT. Victor was a member of the board of Blackwood Innovations, the godfather to Lily, and the man who had delivered the eulogy at Sarah's funeral four years ago.
"Victor..." Robert whispered, a cold, sickening realization sweeping through his mind.
"It was Sterling who introduced you to Rebecca five months after your first wife passed away," Marcus noted, stepping back. "Our forensic team swept Rebecca’s encrypted communications from two years ago. She wasn't a real estate agent, sir. Her real name is Natalia Vance. She was a trained corporate operative employed by a high-end crisis firm in London owned by Sterling’s subsidiary."
Ethan leaned forward from the couch, his hot chocolate forgotten. "They killed my brother to sell his brain... and they tried to kill your daughter to steal your company?"
"No," Robert said, his voice dropping into a register that made the room's temperature plunge. "They tried to kill my daughter to break me."
He stood up, walking toward the grand glass wall overlooking the glittering lights of Boston.
"If Lily died today," Robert murmured, staring at his reflection in the dark glass, "I would have signed over my voting shares in Blackwood Innovations to the charitable trust. The trust whose board is controlled by Victor Sterling. Victor wouldn't just get fifty million dollars from Lily's maternal estate—he would gain control of the world's most advanced AI security network."
The door to the office opened softly.
Lily sat up on the couch, rubbing her eyes with her small fist. She looked around the vast, dimly lit office until her gaze found her father standing by the window.
"Daddy?" her small, fragile voice called out.
Robert turned instantly, his formidable, terrifying presence vanishing in a fraction of a second. He rushed across the room, kneeling beside the couch, taking her tiny hands in his.
"I'm here, baby," Robert whispered, kissing her forehead. "I'm right here."
Lily looked past him, her eyes landing on Ethan sitting in the armchair. She gave a faint, weak smile.
"Who is he?" she asked softly.
"That's Ethan," Robert said, turning to look at the boy with eyes full of profound, eternal gratitude. "He's the hero who saved your life."
Ethan flushed red, looking down at his sneakers. "I just... I just didn't want them to hurt her like they hurt Leo."
Lily reached out her small hand toward Ethan. "Thank you, Ethan."
Ethan hesitated, then stepped forward and gently shook her small hand. "You're gonna be okay now. Your dad is really strong."
Robert stood up, looking at Ethan, then at Marcus.
"Marcus," Robert said.
"Sir?"
"Call the Chief of the FBI's Public Corruption and Organized Crime Division in Washington. Tell him Robert Blackwood is turning over a multi-billion-dollar international syndicate."
May you like
Robert turned back to look at the lights of the city, his jaw set like granite.
"And tell him we start with Victor Sterling."
