Chapter 6 - The Cleansing Fire

Within forty-eight hours of Vance’s confession, the underworld and the corporate world simultaneously imploded.
Viktor didn't send the files to the federal authorities. Instead, he executed a surgical, merciless sweep across every asset tied to Marcus Vance and the conspirators named in the recording. By sunrise, three corrupt board members had been arrested by federal agents on charges of racketeering and historical homicide, while Vance’s vast financial empire was systematically seized, dismantled, and absorbed into the Duca Foundation.
The syndicate was purified. The rot that had festered inside the family for a decade and a half had been excised down to the last root.
Back at the Cold Spring estate, the rain finally cleared, giving way to a brilliant, crisp spring morning.
I stood on the back terrace, holding a cup of black coffee, watching the sunlight glint off the manicured lawns. The atmosphere of the estate had fundamentally shifted. The cold, impenetrable fortress of isolation I had built around myself was gone. In its place stood a home.
Footsteps approached softly from behind.
I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
Elena stepped out onto the terrace, wearing a simple, elegant ivory blouse and dark trousers. The nervous tension that had defined her posture since the day she arrived had vanished. She stood tall, her head held high, carrying the quiet, unbreakable dignity of the woman who had saved my life fifteen years ago.
“The federal marshals picked up Vance’s remaining associates an hour ago,” Elena said quietly, leaning against the stone balustrade beside me. “The news channels are calling it the biggest corporate and criminal takedown in modern history.”
“Let them call it whatever they want,” I replied, taking a sip of my coffee. “It’s just garbage disposal.”
Elena smiled faintly, looking out over the acreage where little Lily was currently chasing the Doberman across the grass, squealing with absolute delight as Kaiser playfully lowered his head and pretended to stumble.
“What happens now, Lorenzo?” Elena asked, turning her dark eyes toward me. “You’ve reclaimed your empire. The enemies are gone. Where do you go from here?”
I turned my head, meeting her gaze. I reached into my pocket, pulled out my father’s black-and-gold pendant, and held it out in the palm of my hand. Then, I placed it gently down on the stone table between us, right next to hers.
“For fifteen years, I lived in the past,” I said, my voice steady and deliberate. “I built my entire life around vengeance, walls, and blood. I thought that was the only way a Duca could survive.”
I paused, looking out toward Lily and the dog, before looking back at Elena.
“Yesterday, you gave me back my past,” I continued softly. “And today... I think it’s time to build a future. Not as Lorenzo the syndicate boss, and not as Mr. Duca the billionaire recluse. Just... as myself.”

Elena looked down at the two matching pendants resting side by side on the stone table, catching the morning sunlight. A slow, radiant smile broke across her face, reaching her eyes for the first time in her life.
“I think,” Elena whispered, stepping closer, “that’s the best business decision you’ve ever made.”
