Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Vales

Four months later, the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was the epicenter of the legal event of the decade. The trial of United States v. Conrad Vale, Grant Vale, and General Vance Sterling drew international coverage.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a clean, dark suit—not my old navy one, but a tailored charcoal suit Emma had bought for me. Beside me sat Emma, her arm fully healed, her fiberglass cast long gone, her skin healthy and vibrant once again.

Across the aisle sat the defendants.

Grant Vale looked entirely broken. The months spent in a federal holding facility without access to luxury, hair stylists, or high-society validation had stripped away his charming veneer, leaving behind a pale, nervous young man who twitched every time a door opened.

Conrad Vale sat beside his new court-appointed public defender—having been abandoned by Victor Vance after the firm was indicted for money laundering—staring blankly at the defense table.

The trial lasted three weeks.

The prosecution, led by a team of unyielding federal attorneys, presented over ten thousand pages of metallurgical testing reports, encrypted digital ledgers, and audio recordings.

The highlight of the trial came on the twelfth day, when Emma took the witness stand.

She walked up the steps with absolute composure, wearing a simple blue dress, her head held high. She sat in the witness box, faced the jury of twelve citizens, and delivered a brilliant, razor-sharp testimony detailing the exact mechanics of the fraud she had uncovered as compliance officer.

When Grant’s defense attorney tried to badger her, suggesting she had fabricated the claims out of romantic jealousy, Emma didn't flinch. She pulled out a certified technical audit log from her handbag and answered every legal trap with precise, unassailable facts.

Standing in the gallery, watching my daughter command the courtroom with intelligence, courage, and absolute dignity, tears of proud quiet joy filled my eyes. She was no longer the terrified girl wearing long satin gloves to hide her bruises. She was a survivor who had helped bring down a multi-million-dollar criminal empire.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.

When the verdicts were read, the courtroom was dead silent:

Conrad Vale: Guilty on all 32 counts, including treasonous procurement fraud, bribery of a federal official, and racketeering. Sentenced to 35 years in federal penitentiary without eligibility for parole.

Grant Vale: Guilty on 18 counts, including felony extortion, aggravated assault, procurement fraud, and obstruction of justice. Sentenced to 22 years in high-security federal custody.

General Vance Sterling: Guilty on 12 counts of bribery, breach of military duty, and grand theft. Sentenced to 25 years and stripped of all military rank and retirement benefits.

As the judge slammed his gavel down, sealing their fates forever, Grant turned his head toward the gallery, looking at Emma one last time. He looked as if he wanted to speak, to beg, to offer one last manipulative apology.

Emma didn't glare at him. She simply took my hand, stood up, and turned her back on him, walking out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight.
