Chapter 2 - Shadows over Bedford

The morning sun broke over the Bedford estate, casting long, pale beams of light across the frost-covered lawns. Despite the pristine beauty of the winter morning, the atmosphere inside the mansion was heavy with an invisible siege.

The arrest of Victor Rossi had sent shockwaves through the syndicate. By noon, news had leaked to the streets that Daniel Mercer’s trusted lieutenant had been hauled away in handcuffs by federal agents, charged with attempted murder and corporate treason.

In the sunroom overlooking the gardens, eight-year-old Caleb sat at a small oak table, his sketchpad open in front of him. Charcoal dust smudged his nose, but his small hands were still. He wasn't drawing. He was staring out at the perimeter fence where three extra security guards in dark tactical coats were patrolling with Belgian Malinois attack dogs.

"Caleb?"

Emma’s tiny voice broke the quiet. She trotted into the room wearing oversized pink bunny slippers and holding a half-eaten piece of dry toast. She climbed onto the chair beside him, her small knees resting on the leather cushion as she leaned over his drawing pad.

"You drew a broken cake," Emma observed, pointing her toast at the paper.

Caleb looked down at his sketch. Without realizing it, he had drawn the shattered porcelain plate on the marble floor, surrounded by jagged lines.

"It wasn't your fault, Emma," Caleb said quietly, his voice carrying a mature weight that no eight-year-old should have possessed. "You were brave."

Emma shrugged, taking a bite of her toast. "The man was bad. He had mean eyes like the blue jay that steals the birdseed."

The door to the sunroom opened, and Daniel stepped inside. He had slept for perhaps two hours. His grey eyes were shadowed, but his posture was immaculate in a dark navy sweater and trousers.

"Morning, kids," Daniel said, walking over and placing a large, warm hand on Caleb’s head.

Caleb looked up at his father. "Is Uncle Victor coming back?"

Daniel’s chest tightened. He sat down in the empty chair across from them. "No, son. Victor is gone. He... he made choices that mean he can't be part of our lives anymore."

"Did he try to hurt me?" Caleb asked directly.

Daniel didn't lie to his son. He never had. "He tried to put something in your food to make you sick. But Emma stopped him."

Caleb turned to look at the three-year-old girl, who was currently trying to feed a corner of her toast to a wooden toy horse on the table. Caleb reached out, grabbed a small blue ribbon from his drawing kit, and carefully tied it around Emma's wrist like a bracelet.

"You're my official guard now, Emma," Caleb declared solemnly.

Emma looked at the blue ribbon, her face lighting up with a brilliant, toothy smile. "I'm a knight!"

"Yes, you are," Daniel said softly, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips for the first time in twenty-four hours.

Rachel entered the room then, carrying a tray of fresh orange juice and oatmeal. She looked rested, but her eyes held a lingering trace of anxiety. Moving into the luxury family suite on the second floor had felt surreal—surrounding herself with silk sheets and marble baths while her uniform hung in a closet that was larger than her previous bedroom.

"Mr. Mercer," Rachel said, setting the tray down. "Natalie is downstairs. She’s asking to see you."

Daniel’s smile vanished. "Where is she?"

"In the main parlor. She looks... very upset."

Daniel stood up. "Stay with the children, Rachel. Frank is outside the door."

In the grand parlor, Natalie Brooks paced back and forth across the Aubusson rug. Her golden hair was slightly disheveled, her eyes red-rimmed from crying. When Daniel walked in, she rushed toward him, grabbing his arms.

"Daniel! Thank God!" she sobbed. "I couldn't sleep all night! Is it true? Was it really Victor?!"

Daniel didn't pull away, but he remained perfectly rigid in her embrace. "It was Victor. He confessed before the feds took him."

"That bastard!" Natalie cried, burying her face in his chest. "How could he do that to Caleb?! After everything we've built! Daniel, I was so scared you thought it was me... I loved that boy!"

Daniel gently placed his hands on her shoulders and pushed her back just far enough to look into her face. "Natalie. Where were you between two and two-thirty yesterday afternoon?"

Natalie froze, a tear catching on her cheek. "What? Daniel... I was in the powder room fixing my makeup before the guests arrived!"

"The powder room on the ground floor?" Daniel asked, his voice entirely flat. "Or the butler's pantry near the secondary kitchen?"

Natalie’s expression wavered. "The ground floor, of course! Why are you asking me this?"

"Because Victor’s phone was seized by the FBI this morning," Daniel said quietly. "And five minutes before Caleb's cake was brought out, Victor received an encrypted text message from a burner phone located inside this house."

Daniel pulled his own phone from his pocket and pressed a button, holding the screen up to her face.

The text message read: The boy's slice is ready. Move now.

Natalie backed away, her face draining of every drop of color. "Daniel... no... you don't understand..."

"I understand everything now," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register of sheer, icy horror. "Victor didn't work alone. He provided the logistics, but he needed someone inside my inner circle—someone who could bypass kitchen security without raising suspicion."

"He threatened me!" Natalie screamed, her regal composure shattering completely. "Victor had records of my art galleries! He knew my father owed millions to the Moretti family in city debt! He said if I didn't help him spark a war between you and the Morettis, he would have my family killed!"

"So you decided to murder an eight-year-old boy instead?" Daniel whispered, stepping toward her.

"I didn't think it would kill him!" Natalie wept, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, clutching at the hem of his trousers. "Victor swore it would just give him a mild allergic reaction! Just enough to send him to the hospital so you would go crazy and attack the Morettis! I swear to God, Daniel, I didn't know it was pure protein! I didn't want him to die!"

Daniel looked down at the woman he had intended to marry in six months. The betrayal cut deeper than Victor's. Victor was a creature of ambition and crime; Natalie was supposed to be the safe haven he had brought into his motherless son's life.

"Get up," Daniel commanded softly.

"Daniel, please! Forgive me! I love you!"

Frank stepped into the parlor, accompanied by two federal agents in dark suits who had been waiting in the hallway.

"Natalie Brooks," the lead agent said, stepping forward with handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit attempted murder, child endangerment, and treason under the RICO statute."

As the agents snapped the metal cuffs around her wrists, Natalie looked back at Daniel, weeping hysterically. "Daniel! Please! Don't do this!"

Daniel turned his back on her. He walked over to the tall French doors overlooking the terrace, staring out at the snow-covered grounds as her desperate screams faded down the grand corridor.

He was entirely alone in the dark world he had created.

Or so he thought.

A small, warm hand slid into his large, cold palm.

Daniel looked down. Caleb was standing beside him, holding his hand tightly. Behind him stood Rachel, holding Emma, her face full of quiet, unyielding support.

"We're still here, Dad," Caleb said softly.

Daniel closed his eyes, squeezing his son's hand, feeling the icy wall around his heart crack just a little wider.
