Chapter 6 - The Lockdown

Within ten minutes of the poisoning attempt, Meridian Atlantic Medical Center was transformed into an armed fortress.
Admiral Alderton had placed a direct call to the Naval District Commandant. Two squads of fully armed Naval Shore Patrol officers in tactical gear arrived at the hospital, establishing a hard perimeter around Floor 4. Every elevator was shut down, every stairwell door was locked, and no staff member was permitted to enter or leave the pediatric wing without clearance.
Inside the floor conference room, a high-stakes standoff was underway.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Victor Vance sat at the head of the table, flanked by hospital legal counsel. He looked furious, his silver hair disheveled.
Across from him sat Admiral Alderton, Dr. Petra Solless, Barbara Elroy, and Sloan Ward.
"This is an unmitigated nightmare!" Vance slammed his hand on the table. "An attempted assassination of a patient in a high-security pediatric wing using hospital-stock pharmaceuticals? Do you have any idea what this will do to this institution's reputation?!"
"I don't give a damn about your reputation, Victor," Alderton said coldly. "Someone just tried to murder my daughter in cold blood. In your hospital."
"It was an isolated criminal act by a rogue employee!" Vance argued desperately. "We are reviewing security camera footage now—"
"The security cameras on the fourth floor were cycled into a ten-minute diagnostic loop at 1:12 p.m.," Sloan spoke up from the back of the room. Her voice was calm, analytical, and entirely devoid of fear. "The loop was initiated remotely from an administrative terminal located in the North Tower corporate offices."
Vance glared at her. "Nurse Ward, you are a junior floor nurse! You have no access to security network diagnostics!"
"I don't need access to know how an internal sabotage sweep works, Dr. Vance," Sloan replied, leaning forward against the table. "The poison used was succinylcholine—a controlled substance locked in the central pharmacy vault. The access log for that vault requires a Level-4 administrative keycard."
She looked directly into Victor Vance’s eyes.
"There are only four people in this hospital with a Level-4 keycard. You, Dr. Marsh, the Chief Pharmacist... and your brother, Julian Vance."
Vance’s face drained of all color. "How dare you—"
"Where is Julian?" Admiral Alderton interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into pure danger.
"Julian left the building twenty minutes ago for a meeting in Washington!" Vance said, his voice rising in panic. "He has nothing to do with this!"
"He has everything to do with it," Sloan said. She pulled a piece of folded paper from her pocket and laid it on the center of the table.
It was a printout of the freight manifest from the truck crash that had hit Lily’s car.
"Twelve hours ago," Sloan explained, "a freight truck owned by Vance Global Logistics ran a red light on 5th Street and struck Admiral Alderton's vehicle. The truck was carrying three crates of unlabelled, experimental neuro-toxic compounds manufactured by Meridian’s unauthorized research wing."
Vance stared at the paper, his hands beginning to shake.
"Julian Vance tried to settle the lawsuit immediately this morning to prevent a forensic search of the truck's cargo," Sloan continued. "When he realized Admiral Alderton hadn't signed the release waiver, he knew the military investigators would inspect the crash site. He realized that Lily—who mentioned hearing a 'mechanical click' before the crash—was a witness to the truck driver deliberately running the light while fleeing federal agents."
Admiral Alderton stood up slowly, staring at the paper. "They tried to kill my ten-year-old daughter to cover up an illegal drug pipeline."
"This is absurd! This is a conspiracy theory concocted by an unregistered nurse with a fake identity!" Vance shouted, pointing an accusing finger at Sloan. "Admiral, don't listen to her! We checked her background! She isn't who she says she is! Her real name isn't Sloan Ward!"
The room fell dead silent.
Admiral Alderton turned his gaze to Sloan.
"Is that true?" Alderton asked softly. "Who are you?"
Sloan took a slow, deep breath. She reached up to her chest, unclipped the plastic name badge she had worn for seven weeks, and laid it gently on top of the freight manifest.
"My name is Major Sarah Vance," she said clearly. "Former Chief Forensic Investigator for the United States Army Medical Materiel Development Activity."
Dr. Petra Solless gasped.
"Two years ago," Sarah continued, her voice steady and echoing with absolute truth, "I uncovered an illegal human pharmaceutical trial network operated by Vance Global Logistics. Before I could file my final report with the Department of Defense, my unit was burned, my credentials were erased, and my partner was killed in a staged car accident."

She looked at Victor Vance, whose eyes were wide with sheer terror.
"I didn't take a job at this hospital seven weeks ago to hide, Dr. Vance," Sarah whispered, her eyes turning to cold steel. "I came here to collect the ledger. And thirty minutes ago, my team secured the main server in your basement."
