Chapter 5 - The Shield of Love

I returned to the hospital immediately after the interrogation. I couldn't bear to be away from Noah for another second.

When I walked into his room, the heavy ventilator had been removed. He was breathing on his own, a nasal cannula delivering oxygen to his small nose. His eyes were open, staring at the ceiling. When he heard my footsteps, his head turned slowly, and a tiny, fragile smile broke through his swollen face.

"Mommy," he whispered.

"I'm here, baby. I'm right here." I rushed to his side, gently climbing onto the bed and laying my head next to his on the pillow, being careful not to touch his IV lines or his bandaged wrist. I wrapped my arm around his tiny frame, feeling the warm, steady rise and fall of his chest.

"I was brave," he whispered, his voice trembling. "I kept the blue hat safe."

My breath caught. "The blue hat? Leo's hat?"

Noah nodded slowly. "The boy in the wall told me to hide it. He said if Grandmother found it, she would throw it away. He said the hat was his magic shield."

"Noah... did you see the boy?" I asked, my heart aching.

"No," Noah said, shaking his head. "He wasn't there anymore. But he left his voice in the walls. He told me not to cry. He said the monsters only eat your tears. So I didn't cry. Not until you came."

I buried my face in his hair, my tears soaking his hospital gown. He had been so strong. A six-year-old boy, locked in a dark, freezing concrete tomb, listening to the echoes of a child who had passed through that hell years before.

"You are the bravest boy in the universe, Noah," I sobbed. "The monsters are gone now. They are locked in a big, dark room, and they are never, ever coming out."

The door to the room opened quietly. Detective Miller stepped inside, his expression a mixture of exhaustion and grim satisfaction. He signaled for me to step out into the hall.

I kissed Noah's forehead, promising I’d be right back, and stepped outside.

"We got the warrants," Miller whispered. "And we found the notary who signed those custody agreements and the life insurance policies. His name is Arthur Pendelton. He’s your mother’s personal attorney. He just confessed to facilitating the fraud. But that’s not the biggest news."

"What is it?"

"Madison made a deal," Miller said. "She led our forensic teams to a secondary location. A wooded area near the Trinity River. They’re digging now, Emily. They think they’ve found Leo Vance."
