Chapter 11 - THE TWO-EYED VIEW

Six months later, the Oregon coast was beautiful and serene, the long expanse of the Pacific Ocean rolling lazily against the sandy shores of Cannon Beach.

A small, shingled cottage sat nestled against the dunes, its wide front windows looking out over the water. There were no sirens, no shadow-filled alleys, no black vans waiting in the dark. There was only the sound of the surf, the call of the gulls, and the warmth of a new beginning.

Noah was running along the shoreline, throwing a red frisbee for a bounding border collie puppy, his laughter echoing clearly over the sound of the waves. His wrist had healed completely, his skin clear of bruises, his face filled with the bright, untroubled light of an eleven-year-old boy who finally knew he was safe.

On the wide wooden deck of the cottage, Megan and I sat in matching Adirondack chairs, holding mugs of steaming coffee as the morning sun began to warm the wood beneath our feet. Megan looked healthy, the sharp, haunted expression she had carried for years completely gone, replaced by a quiet, deep peace.

"I still can't believe you remembered the photo, Emily," she said softly, taking a sip from her mug. "I thought it was a long shot when I wrote that note."

"I told you," I said, looking out at Noah as he caught the frisbee with a triumphant shout. "I'm the lady with two eyes. I see the world the way it actually is, and I don't forget the people who matter."

Megan smiled, reaching across the armrest to squeeze my hand. "Thank you for saving my boy, Em. Thank you for bringing us back to the light."

"We did it together," I said, my heart feeling full and grounded for the first time in my entire life.

I wasn't the lonely woman standing over a bowl of stale cereal in a dark Portland kitchen anymore. I had a family. I had a purpose. The past had been accounted for, the monsters had been broken, and the future lay before us—bright, wide, and beautiful, stretching out like the open sea beneath a cloudless sky.
