Chapter 8 - The Siege of Sterling Estate

"Get the children down into the reinforced panic shelter beneath the library immediately," my father’s voice boomed through the hallway intercom, carrying the absolute, unshakeable authority of a three-star general accustomed to combat zones.

I didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through my veins as I scooped up baby Thomas into my arms and grabbed Sophia’s hand, signaling Chloe, Mia, and Harper to follow me closely. The security team escorted us swiftly through the secret corridor behind the library bookshelves, sealing the heavy titanium-reinforced door behind us just as the distant sound of shattering glass echoed through the grand manor.

Outside the panic shelter, the estate transformed into a tactical theater of operations.

Through the closed-circuit monitors mounted on the shelter’s control panel, I watched with bated breath as four heavily armed mercenaries—wearing tactical black gear and night-vision equipment—breached the front foyer. They moved with military precision, sweeping through the grand hallway, expecting an isolated household of a retired old man and a defenseless mother.

They had severely underestimated who they were dealing with.

As the intruders advanced toward the library, my father stepped out from the shadows of the executive study, wearing a dark tactical vest over his flannel shirt, holding an encrypted control console in his left hand. He didn't flinch as the red laser sights of the mercenaries locked onto his chest.

"Drop your weapons," my father commanded, his voice cold, steady, and utterly terrifying in its calmness. "You have crossed into a federal security perimeter. You have exactly five seconds before my perimeter defense grid initiates localized kinetic neutralization."

The lead mercenary laughed harshly, raising his assault rifle. "Old man, you’re outgunned. Hand over the ledger keys or—"

My father pressed a single red button on the console.

Instantly, the estate’s automated security defenses engaged. Heavy steel blast shutters dropped over every window and door with a deafening crash, plunging the hallway into tactical darkness. Simultaneously, high-frequency sonic disruption pulses flashed through the corridor, instantly incapacitating the intruders' communications gear and dropping all four mercenaries to their knees, clutching their heads in agonizing disorientation.

Within seconds, Major Vance and the federal security team swarmed the hallway, zip-tying the incapacitated mercenaries before they could even fire a single round.

The siege of the Sterling estate was over almost as quickly as it had begun.
