Chapter 10 - The Garden of Stars

Six months later.

The summer sun shone bright and warm over the rolling green hills of the Mercer family cottage in Old Town Northfield.

The garden behind the house was blooming with white lilies, red roses, and tall lavender bushes that swayed gently in the warm June breeze.

A wide wooden deck looked out over the lawn, where a new wooden swing set stood beneath the spreading branches of a massive ancient oak tree.

Elena sat on the porch swing, holding a glass of iced lemonade, watching the garden path.

A blue sedan pulled up the driveway.

The doors opened, and Maya stepped out, wearing a bright floral summer dress, running across the grass toward the swing set with a loud, joyful shout: "Gracie! Look what I brought!"

Grace ran out from the kitchen doors, wearing a white sundress, her dark curls bouncing in the sunlight, her skin healthy, rosy, and bright with life.

The two little girls met near the oak tree, laughing as they held hands and spun around in circles on the soft green grass.

On Maya’s right wrist, the silver bracelet gleamed in the summer sunlight, its tiny heart-shaped charm catching the light like a star.

On Grace’s wrist was an identical silver chain—a second bracelet that Elena had commissioned from the local jeweler, blessed by Father Thomas on the day the adoption papers for Maya were officially finalized by the county court.

Maya’s biological parents had never been found, but she would never be alone again. She was Grace’s sister now, bound not just by law, but by an unbreakable covenant forged in the dark corners of a concrete tower when two terrified children had chosen to protect each other.

Elena walked down the wooden stairs, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and a bowl of peppermint candies.

She sat on the grass beside the oak tree, pulling both little girls into her arms, kissing their foreheads as the warm summer breeze swept across the garden.

Grace rested her head against Elena’s shoulder, looking up at the clear blue sky above them.

"Mommy?" Grace whispered softly.

"Yes, my sweet girl?" Elena answered, holding her tight.

"Are we always going to stay right here?"

Elena looked at her two daughters, feeling the warm sunshine on her face, listening to the soft, rhythmic hum of the summer cicadas in the trees.

The long, freezing winter was over. The unbearable question that had consumed her life for two long years was answered forever.

May you like

Elena tightened her arms around both girls, pressing them close to her heart.

"Yes, baby," Elena smiled, her heart full, complete, and finally at peace. "We are home. And nobody is ever going to take you away again."
