Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at Gate K12

The space between Eleanor, Evelyn, and me transformed into a battleground in a matter of seconds.

"You knew," I said, my voice terrifyingly quiet. The rage building inside my chest was too heavy, too volcanic to scream. I stepped away from Evelyn, walking slowly toward my mother until I towered over her. "You knew she was here. You knew she was pregnant. You told me she walked out on her own accord."

Eleanor didn't flinch. She adjusted her diamond-encrusted bracelet, lifting her chin with aristocratic defiance.

"Lower your voice, Marcus. You are making a public spectacle of yourself over a common nuisance," Eleanor commanded, her eyes flashing with cold discipline. "The girl was an orphan with a glorified event-planning background. She didn't belong in our lineage. She certainly didn't belong raising heirs to the Vance hotel empire."

"They are my sons!" I roared, the sound snapping through the terminal like a gunshot. Dozens of travelers froze, turning to stare at us.

"They are biological accidents that occurred because you lacked the foresight to protect our family's assets," Eleanor replied, her voice dropping into a harsh hiss. "When she came to me six years ago, swollen with your children and weeping about marriage, I did what any matriarch of this family was required to do. I offered her a severance package. She took the money, signed the nondisclosure agreements, and vanished. If she broke the terms of her exile by showing up here, she deserves whatever misery she finds."

I felt the room tilt.

She took the money.

I whirled around to look at Evelyn. She was on her knees now, holding both boys close to her chest, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust and exhaustion on her face.

"Evelyn..." I breathed, the word breaking in my throat. "Did you take money from her?"

Evelyn looked up at me, her green eyes shimmering with a devastating mix of pain and betrayal. "What choice did I have, Marcus? Six years ago, when I told your mother I was pregnant, she didn't just ask me to leave. She brought your family’s chief legal counsel to my apartment within two hours. They laid out two paths: sign an NDA, accept a modest relocation stipend, and disappear quietly... or face a fabricated embezzlement charge that would have sent me to federal prison before my children were even born."

The blood drained entirely from my face.

"She threatened to put you in prison?" I whispered, my gaze snapping back to my mother.

"She protected our legacy," Eleanor stated coldly, showing not an ounce of remorse. "People like her understand currency, Marcus. We bought her silence, and she delivered. Now, pick up your briefcase. The board is waiting in Boston, and this embarrassing chapter is officially closed."

I stood frozen between the mother who had lied, manipulated, and stolen six years of my life, and the woman I had loved, who had suffered in silence to protect our children from my family's ruthless claws.

The choice wasn't difficult. It was absolute.
