Chapter 8 - The Cornered Beast

At 8:00 AM the following morning, federal marshals and state police stormed the high-rise offices of Miller & Associates in downtown Philadelphia.

Julian Miller sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his espresso cup halfway to his lips, as federal agents flooded his office, seizing hard drives, server stacks, and filing cabinets.

Detective Vance walked into the office, tossing a thick federal indictment onto his desk.

"Julian Miller," Vance announced, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and money laundering."

Julian didn't panic. He slowly set down his espresso cup, wiped his mouth with a linen napkin, and smiled thinly. "You're out of your depth, Detective. Wire transfers to a medical trust are completely legal under corporate philanthropic structures. You have nothing."

"We have Evelyn Montgomery's sworn video deposition," Vance replied coolly. "She turned over six years of handwritten letters from you, Julian. Letters explicitly threatening to cut off her life-sustaining medical care if she ever spoke to law enforcement about the bruises she saw on her daughter's body before she died."

Julian’s face drained of color. His hand trembled slightly as he reached for his phone.

"Don't bother," Vance said, snapping handcuffs around his wrists. "Your law license is suspended, your assets are frozen, and your brother just offered to take a plea deal forty-five minutes ago."

Julian blinked in sheer disbelief. "What?"

"The second Daniel realized you couldn't protect him anymore," Vance lied skillfully, leaning down to stare into Julian's eyes, "he pointed the finger directly at you. He told prosecutors that you planned Dr. Thorne’s 'suicide.' He sold you out to save himself from lethal injection."

The toxic bond of loyalty between the two brothers—built on power, control, and shared cruelty—instantly shattered.

"That ungrateful bastard," Julian hissed through his teeth, his eyes turning wild with rage. "I covered up his mistakes for ten years! I made his bodies disappear! I gave him the drugs he used on Hannah! He wouldn't even be alive if it weren't for me!"

Vance hit the red record button on the digital recorder clipped to her vest.

"Thank you, Julian," Vance said softly. "That’s a full confession to being an accessory to murder."
