Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed like a blur of high-stakes medicine, quiet luxury, and a growing, unspoken intimacy between Harper and Julian.

The Sanctum ran like clockwork under Harper’s leadership. The former trauma nurse who had once lived out of a go-bag beneath a foster bed now commanded a sprawling, secure empire of healing. She had a team that respected her, a workspace that valued her brilliance, and a man who looked at her scars like they were the map of a battle won rather than a flaw to be hidden.

Yet, in Chicago, peace was never permanent.

It was late evening when a secure alert pinged on Julian’s private console in his underground operations room.

Harper was sitting across from him at the massive mahogany desk, reviewing supply manifests, when she saw the expression on Julian’s face shift from calm control to cold, razor-sharp focus.

"What is it?" Harper asked, setting her tablet down.

"Marcus Vance," Julian said quietly, tapping a key on his console to bring up a live security feed from downtown Chicago. "He made bail an hour ago. Meridian Financial is liquidating its remaining assets, and Marcus knows his empire is collapsing from the ground up."

"Is he coming after you?"

"No," Julian said, his eyes locking onto Harper with an intensity that made the hair on the back of her arms stand up. "He’s coming after the only leverage he thinks I have left."

The security feed shifted to show the front gates of The Sanctum. A black sedan had rammed through the outer security barrier, and three armed men in tactical gear were spilling out onto the access road, moving fast toward the main building.

Harper didn't panic. She stood up smoothly, walking over to the wall-mounted security panel in Julian’s office.

"They picked the wrong fortress," Harper said coldly.
