Chapter 4 - The Legal Gambit

At precisely two o'clock, Mateo Moretti arrived at the Rinaldi mansion.

Unlike Victor’s rugged, menacing security personnel, Mateo was the picture of corporate perfection—a sharp, fifty-something attorney wearing a tailored three-piece suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase, and projecting an aura of supreme legal arrogance.

They sat in the formal parlor, sunlight filtering through the tall arched windows. Serena had laid out her custody documents, bank statements, and legal correspondence from her ex-husband’s attorney.

Mateo flipped through the pages with practiced speed, his golden fountain pen making occasional notes in the margins.

"Your ex-husband, Julian Vance," Mateo began, his tone analytical, "is a senior partner at Vance & Sterling. A mid-tier litigation firm. He’s arguing that your temporary lack of stable employment and rented studio apartment constitute an unstable environment for a seven-year-old child."

"Julian is lying," Serena said, her hands tightly clasped in her lap. "He doesn't want Lucia. He barely visited her when we were married. He’s doing this because I left him after I discovered he was funneling money out of our joint accounts to pay for his gambling debts."

Mateo raised an eyebrow, looking over his gold-rimmed glasses. "Do you have proof of the gambling debts?"

"He hid it well, but I found bank transfers to offshore casino accounts two years ago," Serena explained. "My previous lawyer said it was too difficult to prove without expensive forensic accountants—money I didn't have."

A cool, amused smirk touched Mateo’s lips. "Miss Valente, you are currently residing in the home of Victor Rinaldi. My forensic accountants can trace a dime dropped in a Cayman Islands account twenty years ago within twenty minutes. If Julian Vance has a financial dirty secret, I will have it printed on parchment before the judge opens his mouth."

Serena felt a breath of hope flutter in her chest. "Really?"

"More importantly," Mateo continued, pulling out a freshly printed document, "this is your employment contract and residential agreement. It specifies that you are employed as the Head Domestic Administrator for the Rinaldi Estate, with a guaranteed annual salary of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, full medical benefits, and a private three-bedroom wing reserved for you and your daughter."

Serena gasped. "Two hundred and fifty thousand? But the contract yesterday said—"

"Mr. Rinaldi revised the figures this morning," Mateo interrupted smoothly. "He felt the previous offer did not adequately reflect the... strenuous nature of managing his household."

At that moment, the heavy double doors opened, and Victor entered the parlor. He had showered, shaved, and changed into a crisp dark blue suit. Though dark circles still lingered beneath his eyes, his presence was imposing and immaculate.

"How does it look, Mateo?" Victor asked, standing beside Serena’s chair.

"It looks like a massacre, Victor," Mateo replied with a dark smile. "Julian Vance’s petition is based entirely on financial disparity. With this employment contract and our character affidavits, his case collapses instantly. Furthermore, I intend to file a counter-suit for full physical custody, back child support, and legal fees."

Serena looked up at Victor, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "I don't know how to repay you for this, Victor. This... this gives me my daughter back."

Victor looked down at her, his expression unreadable. "You repay me by staying. By giving my sons the stability they haven't had since their mother died."

"I'm not going anywhere," Serena promised softly.

"Good," Victor said. "Because your daughter arrives tomorrow."

Serena stood up so fast her chair almost tipped over. "What?"

"I had my security team verify the arrangements," Victor explained calmly. "Under your temporary custody agreement, you have visitation rights this weekend. My drivers will pick Lucia up from her school in Brooklyn tomorrow afternoon and bring her here."

Serena reached out instinctively, grabbing Victor’s forearm. "You brought her here early? Without waiting for the court?"

"Julian’s lawyers tried to block the visitation this morning," Victor said, a dangerous glint flashing in his dark eyes. "Mateo shut them down with an emergency motion. Your daughter will sleep under this roof tomorrow night, Serena. Safe."

Overcome with emotion, Serena forgot who she was speaking to—forgot that Victor Rinaldi was a feared mob boss, a man men bled for. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling herself tight against his chest.

"Thank you," she sobbed into his shoulder. "Thank you, thank you."

Victor froze for a second, completely unaccustomed to genuine, uncalculated affection. Then, slowly, his large, warm hand rested on the small of her back, pulling her slightly closer. The scent of his expensive cologne—sandalwood, cedar, and smoke—enveloped her, grounding her in a feeling of absolute safety she hadn't felt in years.

May you like

"You're welcome, Serena," Victor whispered into her hair, his deep voice vibrating against her chest.

From the hallway, Marco stood watching through the crack in the door. He didn't look angry or hostile. For the first time, the young boy looked at his father and saw something he hadn't seen in three long years: a man who was finally coming back to life.
