Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Past

Clara Vance stared at the tall, impeccably dressed man standing in her squalid basement room. For a second, she closed her eyes tightly, as if believing he was a hallucination brought on by her fever.

"Ethan?" she whispered, her chest rattling violently as she tried to sit up. "No... no, how did you find us?"

"Mommy, don't be scared!" Lily rushed to the bed, throwing her small arms around her mother’s neck. "The man gave me hot chocolate! He didn't let the store clerk yell at me!"

Ethan dropped to his knees beside the dirty mattress. His mind was spinning in a wild vortex of shock, rage, and profound grief. The woman he had spent nearly a decade mourning, the woman he thought had abandoned him because she didn't love him, was lying before him on the verge of death.

"Clara, what happened to you?" Ethan asked, his voice shaking uncontrollably. He reached out to touch her arm, but she pulled back, her eyes darting nervously toward the doorway.

"You can't be here, Ethan," Clara gasped, a fit of coughing taking hold of her frame. "If they know you found us... if your father’s people find out—"

Ethan frowned, his brows knitting together in confusion. "My father? Clara, my father died six years ago!"

Clara froze mid-cough, her bloodshot eyes locking onto his face. "What?"

"My father had a stroke six years ago," Ethan explained, reaching forward and taking her trembling, cold hands in his own. He refused to let her pull away this time. "What are you talking about? Why did you run away nine years ago?"

Tears began to spill down Clara’s hollow cheeks, cutting clean tracks through the dust on her face. "Nine years ago... two weeks after I found out I was pregnant... your father came to my apartment, Ethan. He brought four lawyers and two security men."

Ethan’s blood turned to ice. "My father went to see you?"

"He told me that a marriage between an heir to Caldwell Industries and an impoverished musician would ruin the company's public merger with the Sterling Group," Clara wept, her voice breaking. "He showed me signed documents... he said if I didn't take a check and disappear forever, he would use his influence to make sure I never played violin again, that my brother would lose his union job, and that he would take my baby away the moment she was born through court injunctions."

Ethan listened in horrified silence. He remembered that merger. He remembered how his father had pushed him into corporate meetings, constantly monitoring his phone calls, telling him that Clara had taken a bribe from a rival company and left the country.

"He lied to me," Ethan whispered, the realization striking him like a physical blow. "My father lied to both of us. He told me you took two million dollars and left for Europe."

"I never took his money!" Clara cried out, her small frame shaking violently. "I took a bus to Chicago’s South Side. I changed my name. I worked three jobs until Lily was born... but then I got sick last year. My lungs... I couldn't hold a violin anymore. I couldn't pay the rent."

Ethan looked down at Lily, who was clutching her mother's arm, her wide violet-gray eyes moving between her parents in silent understanding.

"She’s my daughter," Ethan said softly, a tear finally falling from his eye and dropping onto Clara’s hand. "Lily is my daughter."

"She has your eyes, Ethan," Clara whispered through her tears. "I look at her every day, and all I see is you."

Ethan stood up suddenly. He turned toward the open doorway, where Marcus stood guard in the alleyway.

"Marcus!" Ethan called out, his voice returning with the thunderous power of a king reclaiming his throne. "Call Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I want the chief of pulmonary medicine on standby. Get the private ambulance here now."

"Right away, Mr. Caldwell!" Marcus replied, pulling out his encrypted phone.

Clara reached out, panic rising in her chest. "Ethan, no... we can't afford a hospital—"

Ethan leaned down, gently cupping Clara’s thin face in his hands, his thumbs wiping away her tears. "You never have to worry about money again, Clara. You and Lily are coming home. With me."
