Chapter 8 - The Breach

At 5:30 PM, the storm outside the Vale estate intensified, dark clouds plunging the countryside into an early night.

Inside the bedroom, Lily heard the heavy electronic lock click open.

Graham walked in. He wasn't smiling anymore. His jacket was off, his tie was loosened, and his eyes were dark with an explosive, unbridled rage.

In his hand, he held a small digital tablet displaying the external security feed of his front gate. A police cruiser with flashing lights was currently parked outside the iron gates, demanding entry.

"You little bitch," Graham snarled, stepping toward the bed.

Lily scrambled backward, pressing herself against the headboard, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"You gave that investigator something, didn't you?" Graham demanded, his voice dropping to a terrifying growl. "I saw her holding that white bear when she walked out to her car! What did you put in it?"

Lily kept her mouth shut, tears running silently down her pale cheeks.

Graham grabbed the edge of the mattress and flipped it with brute force, sending Lily tumbling off the bed onto the floor. She landed hard on her side, a sharp, agonizing gasp escaping her throat as her left shoulder absorbed the impact.

"Aah!" Lily screamed, curling into a ball on the carpet.

"Get up!" Graham roared, grabbing her by her bad arm's fiberglass cast and pulling her upward. "The police are at the gate! The lab director in Indianapolis stopped answering my calls an hour ago! It’s over—and it’s all because of you and your pathetic mother!"

"Let go of me!" Lily sobbed, struggling uselessly against his iron grip.

"We are leaving through the underground garage," Graham hissed, dragging her toward the door. "And if you make a single sound while I put you in the car, I will snap your other arm like a twig!"

Suddenly, a loud, thunderous crash echoed from the front courtyard below.

The heavy oak front doors of the mansion were smashed open.

"POLICE! SEARCH WARRANT! STAY WHERE YOU ARE!" shouted tactical officers through megaphones.

Graham froze. His face twisted into a mask of pure hysteria. "No... no! Not after everything I built!"

Instead of running for the stairs, Graham dragged Lily toward the back balcony door that led out onto a second-floor stone terrace overlooking the rain-slicked courtyard thirty feet below.

"If I don't get that money," Graham whispered insanely, dragging the crying girl out into the pouring rain, "nobody does!"
