Chapter 6 - The Blood Alliance

By Monday, the city had dissolved into a frantic, high-society circus as the Moretti-St. Clair wedding drew closer. The newspapers were filled with photos of Valeria at various charity luncheons, her diamond engagement ring catching the camera flashes, her arm locked firmly in Dante’s as they visited the cathedral for their rehearsal.

Clara sat in the back row of a small, dimly lit diner four blocks from Moretti Tower, her bags packed and sitting in the trunk of a taxi waiting outside. She had spent forty-eight hours in an agony of indecision, but the sight of two dark cars idling outside her apartment building had finally broken her spirit. She was a mother first. She couldn't fight an empire with a six-year-old child in her arms.

The bell above the diner door jingled, and Marcus Sterling entered, his long black coat damp from the afternoon mist. He scanned the room, his eyes instantly finding Clara’s corner booth. He walked over, his face as severe and unreadable as ever, and slid into the bench across from her.

"The taxi outside is costing you twenty dollars an hour, Clara," Marcus said quietly, not ordering anything from the waitress who approached.

"I’m leaving, Marcus," Clara said, her voice hollow, her eyes fixed on her hands. "Valeria called me. She has the medical board in her pocket. She offered me my license back if I sign a confession for blackmail and leave the state. If I stay, she’s going to take Lily from me using a criminal fraud charge."

Marcus reached into his internal pocket, pulling out a small, encrypted flash drive and placing it on the table between them. "Dante knew she would call you. He knows exactly how Valeria operates. She uses the thing you love most as a knife to carve out your compliance."

Clara looked at the flash drive, her brow furrowing. "What is this?"

"This is the original, unaltered security log from St. Agnes Hospital from six years ago," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a low, authoritative whisper. "The night the VIP patient was injured because of the senior physician’s mistake. Dante had his cyber-security team pull the deleted backup servers from the hospital's private cloud last night. The files prove the doctor altered the medication logs after you left your shift, and that the hospital administration framed you to protect their endowment."

Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes filling with hot, disbelieving tears. "He... Dante found the proof? For my license?"

"Dante doesn't let his people be destroyed by wolves, Clara," Marcus said, a small, rare trace of respect softening his hard face. "He spent the last three days tracking down every line of leverage Valeria thinks she holds over you. The medical board has already received a federal subpoena from our legal team. By tomorrow morning, the physician who framed you will be under arrest, and your license will be fully reinstated by the state—without Valeria’s permission."

Clara wept openly now, the six-year weight of shame and failure rolling off her shoulders like a heavy cloak. "Why is he doing this for me, Marcus? I’m just his secretary."

"Because you were the only one who looked at his mother’s death and saw a crime instead of a transaction," Marcus said, standing up from the booth. "Dante needs you to do one last thing for him, Clara. He needs you to come to the wedding rehearsal banquet tonight at the Valona Lounge. Valeria thinks you’ve fled the city. She thinks she has him blind. We need you to show her exactly how much we can see."

Clara looked at the flash drive, then out the window at the taxi containing her packed bags. The fear that had paralyzed her for days vanished, replaced by a cold, righteous clinical certainty. The nurse was no longer hiding.

"Tell Mr. Moretti I’ll be there," Clara said, wiping her tears away, her jaw setting into that line of stubborn, resilient strength. "And tell him to make sure the St. Clair family brings their best lawyers."
