Chapter 2 - The Night of the Crimson Varnish

The revelation hung in the damp air between them like smoke.

Claire unhooked the security chain and pulled the door open, gesturing for Leo to step inside. He moved with a quiet, efficient grace, instantly scanning the room—noticing the locked front doors, the pulled shades, and the high-powered restoration light illuminating the canvas in the center of the gallery.

"Lock it," Leo said, shaking the rain from his coat.

Claire turned the heavy deadbolt. "My grandfather helped Lucia DeLuca run away?"

"Arthur was more than a painter, Claire. He was a master counterfeiter during the war in Europe before he opened this shop," Leo explained, walking slowly toward the portrait. He stopped three feet away, his eyes softening as he stared at the face of the dead woman. "People came to him when they needed things that didn't exist. Passports. Property deeds. Provenance papers for smuggled art. In 1998, Lucia came to this shop alone, bleeding from a cut under her eye, carrying two hundred thousand dollars in cash and a ledger."

"What kind of ledger?"

"The kind that puts half the political establishment of Pennsylvania in federal prison," Leo replied. "Dominic DeLuca was using his brother's shipping lines to move unregistered firearms through the Port of Philadelphia. Lucia discovered it. She knew that if the feds brought down the family, her son Vincent would end up in a federal penitentiary or dead in a gutter. She wanted out. She wanted to take Vincent and disappear to Canada."

Claire looked at the charcoal hands of the painted woman. "And my grandfather agreed to help her?"

"Arthur spent three weeks creating a complete set of documentation for her and the boy," Leo said. "He painted this portrait during her visits here at night. It was supposed to be a gift for her once she reached Vancouver. But someone inside the DeLuca organization leaked the plan."

"The fire," Claire whispered.

"The fire," Leo confirmed. "Dominic found out she was leaving. The car crash was staged three days after the estate burned. Lucia vanished. The ledger vanished. And Arthur locked this portrait in the basement vault and never spoke her name again."

Claire felt a cold shiver trace her spine. "If Lucia died in 1998, why is Vincent buying up this entire block now?"

Leo turned to look at her, his flint-grey eyes dead serious. "Vincent doesn't know his mother was running away. He thinks she was murdered by rival mobsters. He’s been buying up Old City under the guise of DeLuca Dominion because he’s been systematically tearing down every building his father and uncle owned in the nineties, searching for Lucia's missing ledger. He thinks it's hidden somewhere in the foundations of these old row houses."

"He doesn't want to build a luxury hotel," Claire realized, the pieces falling into place with terrifying speed. "He’s searching for his mother's killer."

"Or he’s searching for the proof that will destroy his own uncle," Leo corrected. "Either way, Vincent is a DeLuca. He moves like a sledgehammer. But you..." Leo pointed at the freshly scraped corner of the canvas. "...you just uncovered something Arthur hid before he died."

Claire instinctively stepped between Leo and the painting. "How do you know what I uncovered?"

"Because Arthur left me a letter before he passed away two years ago," Leo said, reaching into his trench coat. He pulled out a worn yellow envelope sealed with red wax. "He told me that if anyone ever touched the blue background on Lucia’s portrait, it meant the Whitmore Portrait House was in immediate danger of falling to the DeLuca family. He told me to come here and protect you."

Leo handed her the envelope. Claire broke the wax seal with her thumb and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment.

The handwriting was unmistakably her grandfather's:

Claire, my sweet girl,If you are reading this, the past has finally broken through the floorboards. I promised Lucia I would never reveal where her final secret was buried unless her son came seeking the truth. If Vincent DeLuca is standing in your studio, do not trust his lawyers, and do not trust his money. Trust only what you find beneath the floor of Bay 4.Forgive me for leaving you with such a dangerous legacy. The studio was never just an art shop. It was a fortress.Love always,Grandpa Arthur.

Claire closed her eyes, taking a long, shaky breath. "Bay 4. The coordinates I found lead to a storage facility in the Pocono Mountains."

"Then we leave tonight," Leo said smoothly. "Because Dominic DeLuca’s men aren't just sitting in the alley to watch you. They’re waiting for Vincent to leave the city so they can burn this place to the ground, just like they burned the estate in '98."

Before Claire could answer, the front display window of the studio blew inward with a deafening CRASH.

Shower of heavy plate glass rained down across the hardwood floor. A black tear-gas canister bounced twice across the Persian rug, spewing thick, acrid white smoke into the air.

"Move!" Leo shouted, grabbing Claire by the arm and dragging her behind the heavy mahogany reception desk just as the sharp, metallic chatter of suppressed automatic gunfire echoed through the rain outside.
