Chapter 10 - A Future Painted in Gold

That evening, a private family celebration was held on the glass pavilion overlooking the lake.

The table was set with white linen, fresh flowers, and simple, delicious Italian food prepared by Beatrice and the estate chef together. There were no mob bosses, no business contracts, and no dark shadows lingering in the corners. There was only family.

After dinner, as the sun began to set, painting the Chicago sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and deep violet, the boys fell asleep on the soft outdoor daybed, exhausted from a full day of riding their bikes and swimming in the pool.

Lorenzo wrapped a soft cashmere blanket over the twin boys, kissing each of their foreheads gently before walking over to the edge of the terrace where Beatrice stood, holding a glass of sparkling wine.

"They're fast asleep," Lorenzo said softly, stepping behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest.

"They feel safe now, Lorenzo," Beatrice whispered, resting her head against his shoulder as they watched the waves crash gently against the private beach below. "Nico didn't look at the doors once today. He didn't ask if we were going to move tomorrow."

Lorenzo tightened his hold on her, resting his cheek against her soft hair. "They are never moving again, Bea. This is their home. This is your home."

Beatrice turned in his arms, reaching up to gently trace the strong line of his jaw with her soft fingers.

"Thank you," she whispered, her hazel eyes brimming with unconditional love. "For finding us under that broken light. For remembering who we were."

"I never forgot, Bea," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a deep, emotional register that vibrated against her chest. "Even when I was lost in the dark, my heart was always searching for you. You gave me my life back. You gave me my sons."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing the silver locket she had torn from her neck in the rain six months ago—now fully restored, polished to a brilliant shine, and hanging from a fresh, thick platinum chain.

Beatrice gasped softly, her hand moving to her throat. "You fixed it?"

"I had the finest jeweler in Milan restore it," Lorenzo smiled warmly. "Open it."

Beatrice gently unclasped the silver locket.

Inside, where the old photograph used to be, were two new miniaturized pictures painted in delicate watercolor: on the left side was a picture of Lorenzo and Beatrice on their wedding day by the lake; on the right side was a tiny, perfect portrait of Leo and Nicolas smiling under the sun.

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down Beatrice's cheeks.

Lorenzo took the locket, stepped behind her, and gently fastened the platinum chain around her neck, letting the silver pendant rest right against her heart where it belonged.

"It's perfect," Beatrice choked out softly, turning around and throwing her arms around his neck.

Lorenzo lifted her off her feet, spinning her slowly on the sunlit terrace, their laughter echoing out over the quiet lake.

When he set her down, he held her face between his massive, warm hands, looking into her eyes with a devotion that five years of suffering had only forged into unbreakable steel.

"I loved you when we were young, Beatrice," Lorenzo promised, his voice rich and steady. "I loved you when I thought I had lost you. And I will love you until my very last breath."

"And I love you, Lorenzo Moretti," Beatrice replied softly, leaning up to press her lips to his. "Forever."

Hand in hand, the Mafia boss and his restored wife stood together on the terrace, watching the stars fill the clear Chicago sky over their sleeping sons—a family reunited, an empire redeemed, and a future painted in pure, unshakeable gold.
