Chapter 7 - The Shift in the City

Six months later, Detroit had changed.
The Moretti family was gone, their assets absorbed or liquidated by the federal government. The Castellano family still controlled the shipping lines, the construction contracts, and the riverfront, but the way they did business had shifted in ways that baffled the city’s political elite.
A new ten-million-dollar trauma center was being constructed at St. Vincent Medical Center—funded entirely by an anonymous donor through Castellano Enterprises.
And at the center of it all was Beatrice Gallagher.
She still worked two shifts a week in the St. Vincent ER because she refused to give up her license. But now, when she walked through the double doors, she didn't wear worn plum scrubs.
She wore clean, custom-fitted blue scrubs, a solid gold watch on her wrist, and a simple, thick platinum band on her left ring finger.
Outside the hospital, a black Escalade was always parked near the ambulance bay.
Marco Vance sat in the driver's seat, drinking coffee and reading the sports section.

When young residents asked about the scary man in the SUV, Cynthia Mercer would lean across the desk and whisper:
"That’s Mrs. Castellano’s driver. And if you drop a tray near her, he'll make sure you never work in Michigan again."
