Chapter 10 - The Promises We Keep

Six months later.
Autumn had arrived on Long Island, turning the great red maples along the garden paths into brilliant canopies of crimson, bronze, and gold.
A massive white marquee tent had been set up on the grand lawn overlooking the ocean. Over three hundred guests—including representatives from reformed business syndicates, local politicians, community leaders, and the entire staff of the estate—were gathered under the sunlit canvas.
Music from a live string quartet drifted through the crisp sea air.
Standing beneath a floral arch of white roses at the edge of the lawn was Adrian Valenti. He wore a tailored charcoal tuxedo, his hair brushed back, his posture proud, steady, and complete. Beside him stood Marco, wearing a clean suit and smiling broadly.
The music shifted into a slow, elegant processional melody.
The crowd stood up.
Down the long carpeted aisle, little Mia walked slowly, wearing a white lace flower-girl dress with a wreath of yellow buttercups in her hair. She carried a basket of red rose petals, tossing them onto the carpet with extreme, serious concentration. Rex walked right beside her, wearing a matching black velvet bow tie, moving at the child’s slow pace like a royal guard.
And then came Elena.
She walked down the aisle on the arm of the old estate chef, who had tearfully volunteered to walk her down the path.
Elena was breathtaking. Her gown was a masterpiece of simple, flowing ivory silk that caught the autumn sunlight, her dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with pearls. But it was her face that captured everyone’s breath—radiant, free of fear, filled with an absolute, glowing love.
When she reached the arch, Adrian took her hand. His grip was warm, strong, and unyielding.
“You look beautiful,” Adrian whispered, his voice meant only for her.
“You look like a man who keeps his promises,” Elena replied softly, her hazel eyes shining.
The priest stepped forward, opening the leather-bound book.
“Friends and family,” the priest began, his voice echoing across the quiet lawn and the sound of the distant ocean waves. “We are gathered here today to unite Adrian Valenti and Elena Brooks in holy matrimony—a union built not on power or position, but on truth, courage, and redemption.”
The vows were simple, exchanged under the vast blue sky.
When the time came for the rings, Adrian didn't just take one ring from Marco’s tray. He took two.
He slipped the first ring—a flawless diamond set in platinum—onto Elena’s finger, looking into her eyes with a lifetime of devotion.
“I promise to protect you,” Adrian said, his voice deep and steady. “I promise to honor your strength, to share your burdens, and to give you a home where you never have to hide again.”
Then, Adrian knelt down on one knee on the carpeted runner.
The gathered guests let out a soft, emotional murmur.
Adrian held up a second, smaller ring—a delicate silver band set with a tiny pink sapphire.
He took Mia’s tiny hand in his.
“Mia Brooks,” Adrian said softly, looking the four-year-old directly in her eyes. “I promised you once behind a red maple tree that I would find out what happened. Today, I make a new promise.”
Mia peeked at the shiny ring, her thumb tucked near her lips.
“I promise to be your father,” Adrian murmured, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. “I promise to build a umbrella big enough to keep every storm away from you and your mother. And I promise that as long as I live... nobody will ever make you cry behind a tree again.”
Mia smiled—a bright, radiant, beautiful smile that lit up the entire garden.
“Okay,” Mia said simply, holding out her finger.
Adrian slipped the small ring onto her hand, standing up and lifting her into his arms, while wrapping his other arm securely around Elena’s waist.
“By the authority vested in me,” the priest announced with a wide smile, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Adrian leaned down and brought his lips to Elena’s in a warm, deep, passionate kiss that drew thunderous applause and cheers from every corner of the lawn.

Rex let out a loud, joyful bark, spinning in a circle on the grass, while Mia giggled, hugging her stuffed rabbit between her mother and new father.
The sun shone brightly down upon the Valenti estate—a house that had once been built on blood and shadows, but was now, finally, anchored in love, truth, and promises kept forever.
