Chapter 9 - Promises in the Harbor Light

The late afternoon sun sank below the horizon, painting the sky over Ravensport Harbor in brilliant strokes of amber, violet, and deep gold. Down on the terrace of the Ridge Road estate, the joyful sound of children's laughter slowly drifted away as Dominic’s brother and his family packed into their car, waving farewell after a long, heartwarming weekend.

Miles helped pack the last of the luggage into the trunk, leaving Dominic and Claire standing hand-in-hand near the stone balustrade overlooking the cliffs. The ocean breeze was cool and crisp, carrying the clean scent of pine and salt spray from the churning surf below.

Claire leaned her head gently against Dominic’s shoulder, wrapping her arm through his. "Your niece managed to draw a sun on your dock authority folder after all."

Dominic let out a low, warm laugh, leaning down to press a kiss into her dark hair. "I’ll have it framed for my office desk. It’s significantly more pleasant to look at than Harrow’s old shipping manifests."

Silence settled over them—not the tense, watchful quiet of their past lives, but a profound, effortless peace.

Dominic turned Claire toward him, his large hands resting securely on her waist. Under the warm glow of the terrace lanterns, his gray eyes burned with a clear, unwavering certainty. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal an antique platinum ring set with a brilliant, clear diamond flanked by two sapphire stones—the blue of the deep sea.

"Dominic..." Claire gasped softly, her fingers flying to her lips as her breath hitched.

"Four years ago, you walked into my office with a clipboard, an immaculate resume, and eyes that saw through every mask I wore," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a deep, tender register. "I spent years telling myself that keeping my distance was how I kept you safe. But the night you called me from Fourth and Mercer, I realized the truth. I don't want a life without you, Claire. You are my home, my peace, and the only future I care to build."

He lifted the ring from the velvet box, looking directly into her glistening eyes.

"Claire Bennett, will you marry me?"

Tears of pure joy spilled over Claire’s eyelashes as a bright, radiant smile broke across her face. "Yes," she whispered, her voice full of conviction. "Yes, Dominic. Absolutely yes."

Dominic slipped the ring onto her finger, its fit absolute and flawless. Before he could even pull his hand away, Claire reached up, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck and pulling his lips down to hers.

He lifted her effortlessly against him, holding her close as the harbor lights below flickered to life one by one like a sea of stars, illuminating a city that no longer held any shadows over them.
