Chapter 9 - The Negotiation of the Menu

At 5:15 PM on Friday, Harbor Ridge Elementary School was completely empty.
The children had been gone for hours; the teachers had cleared their classrooms; and the long, linoleum corridors smelled of fresh wax and green-tea floor cleaner.
Maggie was standing by the large commercial sinks, her sleeves rolled up, her hands deep in hot, soapy water as she washed the final prep bowls from the afternoon snack program.
The double doors of the cafeteria swung open with a soft, rhythmic whoosh.
Maggie didn't look up. She felt the change in the air before she heard his footsteps—the sudden, heavy weight of a man who carried the winter stone with him wherever he went.
Rafael Moretti walked down the center aisle between the stacked folding tables. He was wearing his dark three-piece suit, his hair neat, his gray eyes fixed on her back. He didn't look like an Ice King today; he looked like a man who had walked through a long, complicated corridor just to find a single, comfortable room.
"The delivery receipt has been signed, Ms. Brooks," Rafael said, stopping three feet from the sink station.
Maggie turned off the water, wiped her hands on her apron, and turned to face him. The apron pulled tight against her curves, the blue cotton marked with a faint white line of flour from the afternoon baking.
"You’re late, Mr. Moretti," Maggie said. "The kitchen officially closed at five."
"I was delayed at the port," Rafael said, his voice dropping into that low, resonant baritone that had occupied her mind for three weeks. "Matteo and I had to reorganize the cabbage crates according to your first-in, first-out method. It took longer than anticipated because the dock workers were arguing about the temperature variances."
Maggie walked out from behind the counter, her flats clicking against the clean tile. She stopped inches from him, her head tilted back to meet his eyes. "Are they keeping the cabbage below forty degrees?"
"Thirty-nine," Rafael said, a genuine, undisputed smile finally breaking across his handsome features. It transformed his stone face into something warm, brilliant, and terrifyingly human. "The contract remains secure, Maggie."
He reached out, his long, powerful fingers catching the edge of her apron string, gently pulling her an inch closer until the scent of his cedarwood and rain cologne mixed with the clean, lemon scent of the school soap.
"The house is too quiet without you, Maggie," he murmured, his thumb rubbing the side of her hip through the cotton fabric of her dress. "The guards are sullen. The chefs are uninspired. And I am entirely without an administrative strategy for my afternoon meals."
"You have a five-billion-dollar empire, Rafael," Maggie whispered, her fingers coming up to rest against the smooth linen of his vest. "You can buy any chef in the world."
"I don't need a chef," Rafael said, his gray eyes darkening with a sudden, lethal tenderness that made her breath catch in her throat. "I need the woman who hit an enforcer with a roll of quarters and saved my supply chain with an agricultural waiver. I need you on the ledger, Maggie. Permanently."

"As what?" she asked, her heart pounding against his chest. "Your hostage?"
"As my Chief of Logistics and Nutritional Compliance," Rafael said, his head lowering until his lips were a breath away from hers. "And as the woman who tells the Ice King when his sodium levels are too high."
