Chapter 9 - The Legacy of the Rose

Late that evening, after the guests had departed and the sun began to set behind the western hills, painting the sky in shades of gold and purple, I walked down to the old oak tree alone.

Beneath the thick branches, a small marble bench had been installed, carved with the image of a wild rose encircled by an oak vine. Beneath the carving were the words:

Clara Valenti & Rose Vance

Guardiens of the Light

I sat on the cold marble, pulling Clara’s silver necklace from my pocket. I looked at the delicate silver work, feeling the peace that had eluded me for half a decade finally settle deep into my soul.

Soft footsteps sounded on the grass behind me.

I turned to see Ethan and Lily walking toward the bench together. Ethan walked without a cane, his posture upright, his movement smooth and natural. Lily walked beside him, chatterbox as always, pointing at a butterfly fluttering near the flowerbeds.

"Hey, Dad," Ethan said, coming to a stop before the marble bench. "Sarah said it was time for cake."

"In a minute, son," I said, beckoning them both over.

Ethan sat on my left, while Lily sat on my right, her tiny feet dangling off the edge of the marble bench.

I reached out and gently unclasped the silver chain, then draped it around Ethan’s neck, letting the rose signet rest over his chest.

"This belonged to your mother," I told him, my voice thick with emotion. "She gave it to Rose to protect you. Now it belongs to you."

Ethan touched the silver pendant with his thumb, looking down at it with deep reverence. "It feels warm."

"That's because miracles are warm," Lily declared with absolute authority, nodding her head so hard her curls bounced. "My grandma told me!"

I couldn't help but laugh—a real, booming laugh that echoed through the quiet garden.

I reached out and wrapped my arms around both of them, pulling them close to my sides.

"Your grandma was a very wise woman, Lily," I said, looking up at the golden sunset spilling across our home.
