Chapter 10 - A Life Full of Air

One year later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the breathtaking gardens of the Oak Brook estate.
White silk canopy tents were set up across the lush green lawns, decorated with hundreds of white roses, eucalyptus, and twinkling fairy lights. Over two hundred guests—doctors, nurses, city officials, former dock workers, and close friends—filled the white chairs arranged along a wooden aisle leading toward a massive floral arch facing the lake.
Standing at the altar was Salvatore Brennan. He looked impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo, his hair neatly styled, his eyes fixed on the house with an expression of pure, nervous anticipation. Standing beside him as best man was Liam, smiling warmly, fully recovered and healthy.
Sitting in the front row was Maya, holding hands with Dr. Vance.
The string quartet began to play a soft, beautiful melody.
Everyone stood up.
Walking down the wooden aisle, holding a small basket of white flower petals, was five-year-old Leo, looking adorable in his mini-tuxedo. He walked with proud, confident steps, tossing petals onto the carpet with a big, toothy grin.
And then came the bride.
Walking down the aisle on the arm of a senior retired doctor from Chicago General who had become a mentor to her, was Dela Marsh.
She wore a breathtaking, flowing lace wedding gown that caught the summer sunlight like spun gold. Her dark-blonde hair was styled in soft, cascading waves adorned with small pearl pins. She looked radiant, powerful, and filled with a deep, peaceful beauty that took everyone's breath away.
As Dela reached the altar, Salvatore stepped down to take her hand. His grip was warm, steady, and filled with deep devotion.
"You are breathtaking," Salvatore whispered, tears glistening in his gray eyes.
"You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Brennan," Dela whispered back with a radiant, joyful smile.
The minister stepped forward, opening the ceremony.
"We are gathered here today," the minister announced, "to celebrate the union of two extraordinary souls whose journey began not in comfort, but in courage, sacrifice, and unconditional love."
When it came time for the vows, Salvatore took both of Dela’s hands in his.
"Dela," Salvatore said, his voice echoing across the silent garden. "A year and a half ago, I was a man trapped in a dark world of my own making. I thought power was measured by fear and weapons. But when you stepped into that warehouse and fought to save my brother, you showed me what true power looks like. You healed my family, you brought light to my life, and you gave me a home. I promise to love you, honor you, shield you from every storm, and stand beside you for all the days of my life."
Dela wiped a sweet tear from her cheek, her eyes shining with absolute love.
"Salvatore," Dela said, her voice clear and ringing with devotion. "When my world fell apart, you became my anchor. You fought for my dignity when no one else would. You loved my son as your own, and you built a life where we can all breathe freely. I promise to be your partner, your refuge, your best friend, and your wife, today, tomorrow, and forever."
The minister turned to Leo, who was standing beside them. "And do you, Leo, accept Salvatore as your father and protector?"
Leo shouted happily, "YES!" making the entire crowd break into warm, delighted laughter.
"By the power vested in me," the minister declared with a wide smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife! Salvatore, you may kiss your bride!"
Salvatore pulled Dela into his arms, dipping her slightly, and kissed her with all the love, gratitude, and passion in his soul.
The garden erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and happy tears.
Later that evening, as the sun set over the lake, casting a golden-orange glow across the sky, music filled the air.
Dela and Salvatore stood on the edge of the wooden dock, looking out over the quiet water. Salvatore wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, holding her close against his chest.
Dela leaned back into his warmth, watching Leo play tag on the lawn with Maya and Liam. Her fingers traced the sparkling diamond ring on her hand.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Brennan?" Salvatore whispered into her ear, kissing her cheek.
Dela turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking up into the eyes of the man who had changed her world forever.

"I’m more than happy, Salvatore," Dela smiled softly, kissing his lips gently under the starlit sky. "I’m finally breathing."
And there, beside the quiet lake, surrounded by the laughter of their family and the sweet promise of tomorrow, the former janitor and the reformed boss stood united—a family built on courage, saved by grace, and unbroken forevermore.
