Chapter 2 - The Fortress of Whispers

The Russo estate sat atop a jagged cliff overlooking the misty waters of Blackwood Bay. It was less a home and more a monolithic fortress of dark granite, reinforced glass, and high iron gates wrapped in security cameras and armed guards.
When the black armored SUV pulled through the gates at three in the morning, the heavy iron closed behind them with a sound like a prison cell locking shut.
Rachel sat in the back seat, still holding Leo wrapped securely against her chest beneath a soft, unbleached cotton blanket she had insisted on bringing from the hospital. The baby had slept through the entire twenty-minute drive, lulled by the deep, rhythmic vibrations of the vehicle’s engine and the constant, steady pressure of Rachel’s arms.
Daniel stepped out first, holding the door open. He reached out to help her, but Rachel ignored his hand, stepping down onto the wet gravel on her own.
"The East Wing has been prepared according to your specifications," Daniel said, leading her through the massive mahogany front doors.
The interior of the mansion was grand, cold, and echoing. High ceilings, marble floors, and dark oil paintings of men with hard, unforgiving eyes. But as they walked down the main corridor, Rachel noticed something odd.
The lights were dimmed. The grand chandeliers had been turned down to a faint, warm glow. The servants who stood at attention in the hallways didn't bow or speak; they simply lowered their eyes and stood completely still, creating an atmosphere of absolute silence.
Daniel had ordered the entire house silenced for his son.
They reached the second floor. Daniel opened a heavy oak door, revealing a spacious, beautifully appointed nursery. The walls were painted a soft, muted sage green. Thick, sound-dampening velvet curtains covered the tall windows, blocking out the wind. In the center stood a custom-built wooden crib lined with organic, un-dyed cotton.
Adjoining the nursery was a smaller bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a private bath, and a window overlooking the gardens.
"This is your space," Daniel said, standing in the doorway of the nursery. "My room is directly across the hall. Matteo and four armed guards are posted on this floor twenty-four hours a day."
Rachel walked over to the crib. With painstaking care, she lowered herself down, keeping her chest pressed against Leo until his tiny back touched the soft cotton mattress. She maintained her hand pressure on his chest for a full minute, slowly rolling her weight off him until he settled into the mattress without a single startle reflex.
She let out a long, slow breath, wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead.
"He's settled," she whispered, stepping back. "He should sleep for another two hours before he needs a tube feeding."
Daniel walked over to the crib. He stood over the sleeping infant, his dark eyes softening in a way that seemed entirely alien on a man whose hands ruled the underworld. He reached down, slowly, expertly imitating the deep, steady palm pressure Rachel had shown him earlier, pressing his broad palm gently over Leo's tiny torso.
The baby let out a soft sigh, settling deeper into the mattress.
Daniel looked up at Rachel. For a brief second, the terrifying mob boss vanished, leaving behind a man hollowed out by grief and desperate to save the only piece of his wife that remained in the world.
"Thank you," Daniel said, his voice rough.
Rachel shifted her weight, suddenly uncomfortable with the raw vulnerability in his eyes. "I'm doing my job, Mr. Russo. And keeping my brother alive."
Daniel’s expression hardened back into stone. "Your brother is currently at our compound in Southside. He is unharmed. He has been given a room, food, and a guard at his door. You will be allowed to video call him tomorrow morning."
"I want to see him in person," Rachel insisted.
"You will see him when I am satisfied that he had no part in the attack that killed my wife," Daniel said coldly. "Until then, he stays where he is."
Before Rachel could argue, a soft knock sounded at the nursery door.
Matteo stepped inside, his face pale, holding a silver tray with a sealed leather folder.
"Boss," Matteo said quietly. "The autopsy report from Camille's vehicle came back from our private medical examiner. And the forensic report on the baby's original incubator at the hospital."
Daniel’s body went rigid. "Speak."
Matteo flicked a cautious glance at Rachel, then back at his boss. "The toxicologist found traces of a synthetic neuro-irritant—a micro-dosed organophosphate compound—on the bedsheets of Leo's incubator at St. Jude's."
Rachel gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "What?!"
Daniel turned on his lieutenant like a unleashed predator, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, violent light. "What did you say?"
"It wasn't just hyperesthesia, boss," Matteo said, his voice shaking slightly. "Someone was systematically poisoning the baby's bedding with a chemical agent that causes extreme skin hypersensitivity, nerve inflammation, and respiratory distress. It was designed to look like a premature medical complication. It was meant to slowly stress his heart until he died of heart failure."
The room plunged into a suffocating, lethal cold.
Rachel felt the blood drain from her face. Extreme hyperesthesia. The doctors had called it a natural complication. Dr. Harrison had prescribed more leads, more monitors, more procedures. But it hadn't been a medical condition.
Someone had been slowly torturing a newborn baby to death inside the hospital.
Daniel’s hands clenched into massive, white-knuckled fists. A low, gut-wrenching growl echoed from his chest—a sound of pure, unadulterated rage that made the glass in the windows hum.
"Who?" Daniel growled, stepping toward Matteo. "WHO TOOUCHED THAT INCUBATOR?!"
"The NICU staff had restricted access," Matteo stammered. "Only three people had signed off on the daily sheet changes for Suite A over the past two weeks."

Matteo pulled a sheet of paper from the folder and read the names.
"Dr. Alan Harrison. Nurse Brenda Vance. And..." Matteo hesitated, his eyes locking onto Rachel with dark suspicion. "...Nurse Rachel Jenkins."
