Chapter 10 - The Sun in the Room

One year later.

The autumn sun over Narragansett Bay was warm and gold, casting a beautiful, brilliant light over the manicured lawns of the Carver estate.

The old stone mansion was no longer a place of shadows and secrets. The heavy, dark drapes had been replaced with bright, airy linens, and the sound of classical music flowed through the open windows of the ballroom.

In the private garden behind the east wing, a small wooden blanket was spread across the grass.

Hannah stood near the edge of the blanket, wearing a beautiful, simple lace wedding gown, her dark hair now grown out into soft, healthy waves that framed her smiling face.

In her arms, she held a healthy, laughing one-year-old boy with bright gray eyes and a soft tuft of dark brown hair.

His name was Aaron Caleb Carver.

Beside her stood Daniel, wearing a handsome navy suit, his expression filled with a deep, peaceful joy that had once seemed impossible for the man who ruled Providence’s waterfront.

He looked down at his wife and son, his hand resting gently on the small of Hannah’s back.

“He’s trying to walk again,” Daniel whispered, his voice filled with a quiet, proud tenderness.

“He has your determination, Daniel,” Hannah said, smiling as she set the baby down on the blanket.

The baby let out a happy squeal, taking two small, wobbly steps toward young Ben, who was sitting nearby with a small wooden toy boat.

Beside the blanket sat Caleb Monroe, his face fully healed, his eyes bright as he watched his nephew. He had taken over the estate’s bookkeeping department, turning the Carver holdings into a fully legal, transparent enterprise that supported hundreds of local dock workers and their families.

Martin Hale stood near the garden path, holding a silver tray with glasses of champagne and fresh lemonade, his gray eyes shining with a warm, fatherly tears as he watched the family he had helped protect.

Daniel took a glass of champagne from Martin, raising it toward his family.

“To the future,” Daniel said, his gray eyes locking onto Hannah’s with a deep, unbreakable love. “To the family we built from the shadows.”

“To the future,” Hannah whispered, her hand rising to touch his cheek.

As the sun began to set over the bay, casting a warm, yellow glow over the garden, Hannah looked at her son playing in the grass. She remembered the words her husband Aaron had said to her so many months ago: “Our baby’s going to wake up believing the sun lives in this room.”

She looked at Daniel, her husband, her protector, and the father of her child.

She knew that the sun had finally found its way into their lives, and the shadows of Providence would never be able to block its light again.
