Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Bank

An hour later, Ethan’s black armored SUV pulled into the subterranean parking garage of the Harris Bank downtown. He didn't wait for his driver to open the door. He stepped out into the damp, concrete-scented air, flanked by two armed security capos.
The bank manager, a nervous middle-aged man named Henderson, was already waiting by the private vault elevator with a folder clutched to his chest.
“Mr. Moretti,” Henderson stammered, unlocking the heavy steel door with a mechanical key and a digital retinal scan. “We... we didn't expect you. Especially not under these circumstances.”
“Open Julian Moretti’s safety deposit box, number 412,” Ethan ordered, his voice clipped.
“Sir, box 412 was placed under a federal and private dual-key seal two years ago following your brother’s death,” Henderson said, sweating profusely under Ethan’s glare. “Only two people hold the secondary key: your late father... and Julian’s legal spouse.”
Ethan pulled a small, silver key from his pocket—the one he had found in the lining of Hannah’s wooden box in the service wing.
“I have the secondary key,” Ethan said, holding it up.
Henderson swallowed hard, adjusted his glasses, and led them down the dimly lit corridor of the high-security vault. The heavy brass door of box 412 swung open with a pneumatic hiss.
Inside lay a thick leather folder, a packet of photographs, and a digital flash drive.
Ethan reached in, pulling out the folder first. He flipped it open under the fluorescent light of the vault.
Inside were bank transfer receipts totaling over two million dollars, routed from a Cayman Islands account directly into a corporate shell company named Vanguard Logistics—a company owned jointly by Vincent Caruso... and Owen Reed, Hannah’s missing brother.
Ethan’s breath caught.
Julian hadn't just been running a shipping warehouse. He had been skimming millions from the Caruso syndicate with the help of his brother-in-law, Owen. And when the syndicate found out, they hadn't just staged a car accident—they had executed him.
And Hannah? Had she known? Was she part of the conspiracy from the beginning, planted in his house to finish what her husband and brother started?
He picked up the packet of photographs.
The first photo showed Julian and Owen laughing over drinks at a Chicago harbor club three weeks before Julian’s death.
The second photo showed Hannah standing beside them, holding a ledger.
The third photo... made Ethan’s heart stop completely.
It was a picture taken secretly through a window. It showed Hannah sitting in a hospital room holding a newborn baby boy—dated six months before Julian’s death.
No. That wasn't right.
Ethan stared at the date stamp on the digital metadata printed at the bottom of the photo: October 14, 2024.

Hannah’s current pregnancy was her second child.
She had already given birth to Julian’s first son two years ago. And the child... was missing.
