Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Number 40

By 9:00 AM the following morning, Ashgrove Street looked like an official government staging ground.

Brenda Dixon stood on her front porch in her housecoat, her face pale as flour, screaming at three uniformed city officials who were slapping bright orange notices onto her front door.

"You can't do this!" Brenda shrieked, her voice echoing down the block. "This is my house! I've lived here for twelve years!"

"Ma'am, your home has fourteen code violations, an unpermitted basement expansion, and evidence of hazardous waste dumping," the lead inspector said coldly, checking his clipboard. "The city is condemning the property effective immediately. You have two hours to pack your personal belongings."

At the curb, two tow trucks were already hoisting Gary Dixon’s prized pickup truck and Tyler’s unregistered dirt bike onto flatbeds. Gary, wearing a heavy knee brace from his encounter with Wilton the night before, limped out onto the lawn, waving his arms wildly.

"Who called you?!" Gary roared. "Who did this?!"

From her clean, immaculate porch at Number 42, Kayla stepped out. She wore a simple beige trench coat, holding a mug of warm coffee in one hand and Milo’s leather leash in the other. The old dog sat proudly beside her, his coat brushed, his silver tag gleaming brilliantly in the morning sun.

Gary saw her and froze. The realization hit him like a cold bucket of water.

"You..." Gary gasped, limping toward the property line. "You did this! You snitched to the city!"

Kayla took a slow sip of her coffee. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to.

"I didn't snitch, Gary," Kayla said pleasantly. "I simply filed a formal civic complaint. As a homeowner, I have a right to live on a safe, compliant street. Isn't that what Brenda told me three days ago? If you want to live here, you follow the rules."

"You crazy old bitch!" Gary screamed, taking a step toward her. "The Silver Blades will tear your house down brick by brick! Dominic Vance will kill you himself!"

"Dominic Vance?" Kayla repeated, playing innocent with effortless perfection. "Oh, dear. You shouldn't have said that name out loud."

Before Gary could respond, two sleek black sedans pulled up to the curb behind the city vehicles. The doors opened, and four men in sharp grey suits stepped out. They didn't look like city inspectors. They looked like high-level corporate auditors—the kind of men who worked for federal agencies.

The lead auditor walked straight past Gary, giving Kayla a brief, respectful nod, before pulling a heavy federal warrant from his jacket.

"Gary Dixon?" the auditor asked. "You're under arrest for grand theft auto, interstate tax fraud, and racketeering in connection with Vance Logistics."

Gary’s jaw dropped. "What?! I don't know any Vance Logistics!"

"Your bank records from last Tuesday say otherwise," the auditor replied, pulling out steel handcuffs. "Take him."

As Gary was dragged away weeping, Brenda collapsed onto her front steps, sobbing hysterically into her hands. Tyler stood on the lawn, his tough-guy gang act completely shattered, looking small, pathetic, and terrified.

Kayla looked down at Milo. "Come, Milo. It's time for our morning walk."
