Chapter 6 - The Silver Threshold

Dawn was breaking over Lake Michigan, painting the heavy gray clouds in streaks of bruised purple and pale gold.
Julian’s Maybach pulled back into the private courtyard of the DeLuca estate just as the first morning delivery trucks rolled past the gates. Inside the mansion, the servants were quietly cleaning the remnants of the ballroom gala, scrubbing the marble floor where Lily had danced her mother’s bluebird turn only twelve hours earlier.
Julian stepped out of the car, his clothes rumpled, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. He walked straight through the heavy double doors and headed down the private corridor toward the family’s medical wing.
Outside Cassandra’s room stood Dr. Vance, holding a fresh medical chart. His face wore an expression Julian had not expected to see: cautious, guarded relief.
Julian stopped inches from the doctor. "Talk to me."
"It was touch-and-go for six hours, Mr. DeLuca," Dr. Vance said, adjusting his glasses. "The aconitine dose was near-fatal, but because the paramedics administered the reversal agents immediately on the estate grounds, and because her natural heart rhythm held... she survived the critical window."
Julian let out a long, ragged breath he felt he had been holding since midnight. "Is she conscious?"
"She woke up twenty minutes ago," Vance replied. "She's weak, and she'll need months of physical rehabilitation for her nervous system, but she's going to make a full recovery."
Julian nodded slowly. He pushed the heavy wooden door open and stepped inside the sterile, sunlit room.
Cassandra was propped up against a stack of pillows, an IV line taped to the back of her pale hand. The oxygen mask had been removed, leaving only a small nasal cannula supplying supplemental air. When she heard the door open, she turned her head slowly on the pillow.
Her eyes, usually sharp and calculating, looked softer, haunted by the brush with death she had just survived.
"Julian," she whispered, her voice raspy and dry.
Julian walked to the side of the bed, pulling up a leather chair and sitting down. He reached out, taking her cold, frail hand in his strong grip.
"You're an idiot for drinking that champagne without checking the seal," Julian said, his voice laced with a gentle, gravelly warmth.
A faint, self-deprecating smile touched Cassandra’s lips. "I spent my whole life thinking perfection was a shield, Julian. Last night... when I was falling... I realized I didn't even know what I was protecting."
She looked up at him, her gaze piercing through the defenses she had built over a lifetime. "The little girl... Lily. Is she safe?"
"She's safe," Julian said softly. "She and her mother are upstairs."

Cassandra closed her eyes for a moment, a single tear escaping down her cheek. "I want to honor that promise, Julian. The million-dollar trust. I mean it. Not as a stunt... but as a start."
"It's already in motion," Julian replied. "The legal paperwork was filed an hour ago."
